The way Cantonese people welcome the summer solstice

Three ways for Cantonese people to welcome the summer solstice are as follows:

1. Eat lychees. Eating dog meat and lychees during the summer solstice is a "patent" that people in Lingnan area want to eat in the name of others. It is said that eating dog meat and lychees together on the summer solstice is not hot. There is a saying that "fish in the winter solstice give birth to dogs in the summer solstice". Therefore, the habit of eating dog meat and lychees in the summer solstice continues to this day.

2. Eat dog meat. In Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, there is a custom of eating dog meat during the summer solstice. Kaiping people's custom of eating dog meat during the summer solstice has been passed down to this day. On the one hand, it has superstitious reasons such as warding off evil spirits; on the other hand, dog meat is nourishing and warms the stomach. After the summer solstice, farmers have to harvest and cultivate, which consumes a lot of physical energy. Eating dog meat can enhance physical strength. Dog meat is a hot food.

3. Kaisi Festival. Every summer solstice, farmers from all over the country are busy offering sacrifices to the gods, called "sacrifice to the sky", to pray for good weather. There are differences between north and south in offering sacrifices to the sky. People in the north pray more for rain to prevent drought; people in the south pray more for sunshine to prevent floods.
