1939, Adolphe Kegresse, a Frenchman, put forward the design principle of double clutch. 1940, Rudolf Frank, a German, applied for a patent for the dual-clutch gearbox, but it was finally limited by the control technology and materials of the dual clutch and could not be mass-produced. Later, in the 1980 s, dual-clutch gearboxes began to be installed in a large number of racing cars, making their mark in racing cars.
Volkswagen has never had its own automatic gearbox technology, while Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and other car companies in the same period have realized independent design and production or joint production, while automatic gearbox technology has been firmly controlled by ZF, Aisin and other enterprises. In order to avoid patents, Volkswagen began to cooperate with Borg Warner on 1990.
Research and Development of Dual-clutch Gearbox for Family Cars In 2002, Volkswagen took the lead in mass-producing dual-clutch gearboxes on its Golf R32, and then gradually carried them on other models such as Audi and Volkswagen, which means that Volkswagen is the first car company in the world to popularize dual-clutch in family cars.
After more than ten years of development and improvement, especially in the complex domestic car environment, Volkswagen has accumulated enough experience through free testing by many domestic consumers, which means that no one dares to say second in the field of dual clutch.
