How is the special frame structure of the Audi A8L different from other cars?

A8L adopts ASF all-aluminum body structure, which is strong, stable and very lightweight. The aluminum body of the new Audi A8L once again sets new standards. The ultra-low weight body of 231 kg is a key factor for the new Audi A8L to achieve extraordinary driving dynamics and excellent efficiency. If steel is used, the weight of the body will increase by about 40%.

Fifteen years ago, Audi launched Audi Space Frame Structure (ASF) technology in the first-generation A8 model. The Audi space frame structure has proven its merits extremely well. Now, Audi is taking this technology to the next level in a more advanced form in new models. The Audi space frame structure follows the principles of bionics, which means it draws inspiration from nature. The frame is constructed from aluminum extrusions and die-cast parts, with aluminum panels held together by friction connections. Like the skeleton, all components combine optimal functionality with low weight. Materials are used only where necessary and are always custom configured. Audi uses 13 types of aluminum alloys in the new A8L. The combined weight of all castings is 3 kilograms lighter than the previous model, most of which are made from high-grade alloys. Particularly large components connect the sills to the rear longitudinal members. The complex geometries and wall thicknesses result from Audi’s valuable experience in body technology accumulated over many years. In addition, Audi has also made new breakthroughs, and the body ribs also use bionics principles.
