Patent of BMW supercharger

Recently, Borgwarner announced that its dual-channel turbocharger has been adopted by BMW and will be adapted to a 3.0L inline six-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine is widely used in BMW passenger cars. With the new supercharger, it can provide two performance options: 250 kW, 500 Nm, 280 kW and 550 Nm. ..

When it comes to inline six-cylinder engine, people may think of 2JZ-GTE on Toyota Supra for the first time. In fact, BMW is the real king of straight six. First, BMW "Straight Six" has a history of nearly a hundred years. Secondly, in recent years, from the engine code N54 to the later N55 engine to the B58 engine, each model represents the latest research and development achievements of BMW in the field of turbocharging technology at that time.

With the use of 1.5T in Mercedes-Benz E-Class today, it is very rare for car companies like BMW to adhere to the evolution of 3.0T straight six-turbo engines. Now, with the help of Borgwarner, BMW's classic engine has been sublimated.

"Borgwarner Dual-Channel Turbocharger"

Hysteresis is a natural physical defect of exhaust gas turbocharger, so many performance-oriented cars will use double turbocharging, mechanical turbocharging and electronic turbocharging to make up for this defect, but this will undoubtedly increase the cost.

This time, the "dual-channel turbine technology" provided by Borgwarner for BMW can produce similar effects as the dual-turbine technology, and has many advantages such as smaller size, lighter weight and lower cost.

In terms of working principle, each flow channel of Borgwarner dual-channel turbocharger can be used by three cylinders at the same time, the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger pipeline are arranged separately, and the pulsating tail gas is guided by two independent spiral air chambers in the turbocharger, which effectively prevents the airflow from interfering with each other. The turbocharger is equipped with two independent small nozzles to improve the response speed.

Finally, compared with the single-channel turbocharger, the dual-channel design can recover the energy in the exhaust gas more efficiently, reduce the parasitic reverse loss and improve the response speed of the engine at low speed.

Write at the end:

At present, the small-displacement turbocharged engine has become the mainstream of the market, but it is still the dream of every big boy to have a performance car with a large-displacement turbocharged engine regardless of economy or emission restrictions. When the new Toyota Supra is equipped with a BMW straight six engine, we should understand that there are not many car companies that can adhere to the evolution of straight six engines in this era.
