Starch is the most important component of grain, which is usually produced by crops fixing carbon dioxide through natural photosynthesis. The synthesis and accumulation of starch in nature involves more than 60 biochemical reactions and complex physiological regulation. Synthetic starch is an important subject in the field of science and technology. Previously, scientists from many countries actively explored, but no substantive breakthrough has been made. ?
Ma Yanhe, a researcher at Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, led the team to design and construct an unnatural carbon fixation and starch synthesis route of 1 1 step from scratch in a similar way, and realized the full synthesis of carbon dioxide to starch molecules for the first time in the laboratory. Nuclear magnetic resonance and other tests show that the structure and composition of synthetic starch molecules are consistent with those of natural starch molecules. ?
Preliminary laboratory tests show that the efficiency of starch synthesis is about 8.5 times that of traditional agricultural production. Under the condition of sufficient energy supply, according to the current technical parameters, in theory, the annual starch output of bioreactor with the size of 1 m3 is equivalent to the annual starch output of 5 mu of corn field in China.
Internationally renowned experts spoke highly of it.
Manfred Reitz, an academician of the German Academy of Sciences, Jens Nelson, an academician of the American Academy of Engineering, and other internationally renowned experts spoke highly of this achievement, believing that this major breakthrough has pushed the research in this field forward a big step.
Qi zhou, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the results are still in the laboratory stage, and there is still a long way to go before practical application. The concept of "0 to 1" should be broken through to "1 to 10" as soon as possible.
It is understood that with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biology is taking the lead in building the National Synthetic Biotechnology Innovation Center. On the one hand, the next goal of the research team is to continue to overcome the underlying scientific problems such as the design and regulation of the artificial biological system for starch synthesis, and on the other hand, to extend the results to industrial applications, so that the economic feasibility of synthetic starch is close to future agricultural planting.
