The 57-year-old uncle built a "sky vegetable garden" on the roof of his building, with an annual output of more than 1,000 kilograms. How did he do it?

For He Jianhua, the most leisurely and relaxing time of the day is to go to the roof of his community, collect the fruits he planted, prune the flowering branches and clean up the fruit leaf waste. Once done, you can pick a peach from the tree, wash it and eat it. It features flowers, vegetables and fruits and is particularly suitable for use in high-rise buildings surrounded by cities. In spring and summer it's like a little paradise. He Jianhua sat on the chair and looked at the phone leisurely, looking at the one-third acre of land that I carefully cared for. No matter how complicated the process was, I thought it was worth it.

He Jianhua is 57 years old and lives in Xi'an. In 2009, He Jianhua's roof suffered a serious leak. After consulting with the property owner, he decided to repair the roof at his own expense. Currently, the roof has been repaired three times at a cost of about 40,000 yuan. After the repairs, He Jianhua felt that the roof had become bare and wanted to do something to protect the roof and reduce the temperature of the roof. After discussions with the community property, he started the roof greening project.

So He Jianhua began to try to grow some vegetables and flowers. Home-cooked dishes such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and eggplants. In 2015, He Jianhua purchased a greenhouse and placed it on the roof. In winter, he grew some strawberries and vegetables in the greenhouse, which were fresh and convenient. Slowly, He Jianhua grows a total of 30 kinds of vegetables every year, and can eat the vegetables and fruits he grows all year round. He Jianhua said: "When the most vegetables are grown, the annual output exceeds one thousand kilograms. Vegetables are usually eaten too much. We will give them to the neighbors to eat."

[k0] said, When I first started growing vegetables, I used hydroponics. After years of practice, I have discovered that vegetables grow well. Therefore, He Jianhua applied for a patent for his own cultivation method. In the greenhouse, He Jianhua carried out three-dimensional hydroponics, planting three layers in total and trying to grow some rice on the upper two layers. Fortunately, the planting was successful.

Various vegetables and fruits, such as peppers and greens, are now grown on the roof. He Jianhua said that he has always insisted on soilless planting and soilless cultivation, which can save about 80% of soil compared with traditional soil farming, so it has no impact on the weight of the roof. In addition, he adopted highly automated equipment that can automatically replenish water, connect to water pipes, and add liquid level switches to form a water supply system to recycle water resources. It not only saves water resources, but also does not consume too much manpower and material resources.

“After growing vegetables on the roof, the biggest feeling I felt was the coolness. Before planting the vegetables, the roof temperature in Xi’an in summer was about 60 degrees. When the weather is hot, it is best to do it when the vegetation is growing the most. During the peak season, the shading effect is particularly good, and the summer is not as hot as before," He Jianhua said happily.

In addition, He Jianhua’s family members are very supportive of the green roof he built, and owners and community members often visit.

"I am a lazy person." This is what He Jianhua often says. I have never lived in a rural area or worked in agriculture, but He Jianhua has an "agricultural complex" and likes to grow his own fruits and vegetables. I find it very interesting. Regarding his own method of growing on the roof, He Jianhua claimed that if there are various conditions, such as growing vegetables, everyone can try it. It has great promotion value and is something that benefits the country and people.
