Does a big screen have "big radiation"? The real "accomplice" is this

Tesla has always been regarded as the vane of the new energy vehicle revolution. In 2012, the Model S central control screen was equipped with a 17-inch large screen for the first time, which has since opened the prelude to large car screens. , major car companies have followed suit.

Nowadays, large car screens have become a trend. At the same time, a voice comes: "Large car screens will bring more electromagnetic radiation, which can range from hair loss to cancer." This is Really?

It is true that electromagnetic radiation is "toxic", but we all know that it is meaningless to talk about toxicity regardless of dose. So, what is the electromagnetic radiation dose of a large car screen?

Let’s talk to you in this issue of "Car Health Clinic"

"The problem of electromagnetic radiation from large car screens"

01

Big Screenization, the development trend of the automobile industry

A hundred years ago, when the car was first born, it was a "convertible" with no doors. Nowadays, cars not only have doors and various complex and sophisticated instruments, but also a device to control these instruments - the center console. All our operations, including navigation, instrument information display, and leisure and entertainment, are concentrated there. It can be said that "a small world has a lot to offer."

The first modern car "Mercedes-Benz Patented Electric Locomotive No. 1" in 1886 and the central touch screen of the Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV in 2020

With the development of automotive technology, the Internet of Things and wireless With the rise of human driving, center consoles have become more technological and visual. As a result, screens have become larger and larger, and the mainstream size has increased from the previous 7-8 inches to more than 10 inches.

The article "From Mercedes-Benz to Tesla, the visual application that triggered the interior revolution adds new ways of playing" published in August this year mentioned:

According to According to the reporter's statistics, among the new cars launched in a certain month, there were only 10 models with central control screens less than 8 inches, 36 models with 8-10 inches, and as many as 45 models with more than 10 inches. Large-screen automobile products are also widely distributed, including new models of high-end brands and facelifted models of independent brands, mainstream joint venture products and models promoted by new car-making forces.

It can be seen that when large screens become the focus of car companies and become mainstream standard equipment, whether consumers are willing or not, they will most likely choose a car with a large screen when buying a new car. If they want to buy a car with a small screen, they will A car that is easy to control will become increasingly difficult.

02

The bigger the screen = the greater the radiation?

The advantages of a large screen are obvious: information transmission is more direct and comprehensive, interactive and operable, and diverse entertainment and personalized settings make the car's functions richer. Coupled with the Internet of Vehicles technology, the future development of this screen and cars has more room for imagination.

But rumors are also rampant on the Internet.

"Will large screens bring more electromagnetic radiation? I heard that it can range from hair loss to cancer. Is this true? Can pregnant women not ride in cars with large screens..." Electromagnetic Radiation is indeed "poisonous" and is considered to be the fourth major public hazard faced by mankind after air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution. Data show that electromagnetic radiation can harm the most critical parts of the human body, such as the immune system, reproductive system, circulatory system, and metabolic system.

However, electromagnetic radiation is different from nuclear radiation. If the exposure dose does not reach a certain level, the impact on the human body is actually minimal. So, what is the electromagnetic radiation dose of a large car screen? Can it endanger human health?

The China Automotive Health Index, a subsidiary of China Automotive Research Institute, has a dedicated indicator to test the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of cars, which covers four working conditions: uniform magnetic field, rapid acceleration magnetic field, rapid deceleration magnetic field and communication electric field. To test.

At the beginning of this year, China Automotive Health Index released the "C-AHI China Automotive Health Index 2019 Annual Evaluation Report". The report *** conducted EMR tests on 2 batches of *** 20 models. The results showed that the overall results of the test models were good, with 12 models receiving five-star ratings and 8 models receiving four-star ratings.

Among them, there are two surprising discoveries regarding the problem of large-screen radiation.

Finding 1: The size of the central control screen is not positively correlated with the size of its low-frequency magnetic field radiation

As can be seen from the picture above, the screen sizes of 20 vehicles range from 7 inches to 15.6 inches. However, the test results showed that the values ??of the 19 vehicles were all within the noise floor level of the measuring equipment, which was approximately between 1.27 and 3.73, and there was no change. The maximum test size is 15.6 inches (left side of the picture above), and the value is only 2.4, which is lower than the value of 2.56 for 7 inches (right side of the picture above).

It can be seen that the size of the central control screen does not have a positive correlation with the size of the low-frequency magnetic field radiation.

Finding 2: The test values ??in different areas of the large central control screen are equivalent

The EMR test also tested different areas of the large screen, as shown in the figure below at 5 points.

The test results show (below) that the 5-point values ??range from 1.99 to 2.14, and there is also little change. In other words, the values ????at different positions on the same large screen are similar, and they are all at a low level.

From the above data, large car screens will not bring more electromagnetic radiation. Car companies can effectively control electromagnetic radiation to a low level through strict design and testing control of related parts. .

03

Communication conditions are the biggest “accomplice”!

Although large screens will not bring more electromagnetic radiation, it does not mean that we can take it lightly. Don’t forget that one of the test conditions is “communication working condition”.

The so-called communication working condition refers to when the vehicle is stationary, Key On, equipped with mobile communication equipment, and the vehicle T-BOX (or vehicle-mounted mobile communication equipment with equivalent functions) is connected to the base station simulator. And the electromagnetic radiation conditions generated when transmitting at maximum power.

The test found that the state of the car's electricity radiation under communication conditions is the main reason that affects the final score. The report shows that the EMR test scores of the first batch of 10 test models exceeded 95 points under rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration and constant speed, but only 40.5 points were obtained under communication conditions.

Communication is the main losing factor, mainly because the vehicle companies do not pay enough attention to the electromagnetic radiation in the vehicle under communication conditions. However, there is a solution. Tests have found that placing the vehicle wireless communication antenna externally can not only reduce the electromagnetic radiation in the vehicle, but also improve the communication effect.

So, the large screen is not the decisive factor in high car radiation. Car radiation comes from the simultaneous effects of many accessories under different working conditions. As long as car companies can improve and upgrade technology, the radiation of cars is not uncontrollable.
