With the progress of the times, the judgments of historical figures have different standards. Many behaviors that seem to be beneficial to the contemporary era are actually harmful to the future. There is such an inventor in the history of the world. He was once hailed as a genius among geniuses. He invented two major patents and once promoted the progress of human society. However, later people discovered during investigation and research that these two inventions caused Countless troubles, and even the death of individual humans, pushed him off the altar and called him the most murderous individual in history. This person is the American inventor, Thomas Midgley.
After graduating from Cornell University in the United States with a major in mechanical engineering, Thomas Midgley joined General Motors' Dayton Laboratory. Because Midgley was extremely talented, he excelled after studying chemistry by himself for several years. Completed the tasks assigned by the organization: discovered tetraethyl lead. Tetraethyl lead is an excellent gasoline anti-riot agent, which can greatly reduce engine fuel consumption and enhance engine life. It is precisely because of this that tetraethyl lead was once used by automobile manufacturers around the world after it was discovered.
Migili and his business partners
The American chemical community also began to take notice of this talented young man. At the age of 33, Midgili was awarded the Migilinix Medal. In order to prevent people from fearing the lead in tetraethyl lead, General Motors named the compound ethyl. However, with the promotion of leaded gasoline, there are more and more deaths caused by lead poisoning. Even Midgeli himself is not immune and must take a long vacation to relieve the pressure on his body.
After being exposed by the public media, Midgley had no choice but to put on a public show. He opened tetraethyl lead in full view of the public, put it under his nose and inhaled it for a minute, and then walked around. Showing that he is safe and sound can reassure the world. However, what is less known is that after sucking on such an object, Midgeli collapsed in the hospital bed for nearly a year. Leaded gasoline was only banned in the 1970s and 1980s. And it was also because leaded gasoline caused countless human deaths that Midgeli was rated by later media as the most murderous individual in history.
Midgeli demonstrates the efficacy of CFC
Another discovery made by Midgeli is even more familiar: CFC. In order to study a non-toxic gas, it is a type of refrigeration gas that is non-toxic, non-flammable and easily liquefied. Midgley discovered CFC and promoted it. In 1937, Midgley was awarded the Perkin Medal. Everyone knows the later story. CFC was proven to be harmful to the ozone layer and would affect normal human habitation and life. Therefore, CFC refrigerators were also restricted or discontinued.
The final cause of Midgli’s death also had some drama. Because he contracted polio and became crippled, Midgeli specially designed a multi-functional bed for himself, which can freely lift or turn over on the bed. However, in 1944, he was strangled by a rope pulley on his bed and suffocated to death on the spot.
