Ford applied for a patent for the windshield and roof design. The roof is covered with glass and is still strong.

Ford has applied for a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that provides a windshield and roof design.

They use this kind of windshield on a Ford Mustang body. This kind of glass can extend above the heads of the front passengers and become part of the roof.

Much of the patent is about how the design maintains the necessary rigidity.

Ford's solution was to use a pair of "X"-shaped roof reinforcements that sit in the middle of the roof and connect the front windshield and rear window. In theory, this design could make the car very strong in a crash, but it's not known if Ford has tested it or just registered the solution.

Still, the windshield design described in this patent is attractive, even if it looks a bit out of place on a Ford Mustang. Maybe such a design is more suitable for an SUV or crossover, but if this glass is to be used in a five-door car like the Mustang Mach-E, rather than a two-door car like a regular Mustang, then the windshield and rear window The central section in between needs to be bigger, or the windshield itself can be made huge.

The patent was first filed on May 14, 2018, and published about a month ago. Apparently, Ford has been working on this for a while, but it's unclear if this roof will be ready for production.
