In the past ten years, the rapid development of optical communication technology has provided users with huge bandwidth. In the past few years, the research focuses on the physical layer, such as optical fiber technology, optical devices and optical switches, while the upper optical network management protocols and systems have just started. The intelligence of telecommunication network only exists in the electronic exchange layer composed of IP router and ATM switch, while in the optical transport layer, although there are large-capacity wavelength division multiplexing transmission equipment and optical cross-connection equipment, the optical connection is still manually configured, which is inefficient, complicated to operate and prone to errors, seriously restricting the flexibility, reliability and expansibility of the network, so it is necessary to introduce higher intelligence in the optical layer, and this intelligence is realized through the optical network management system. ONMP is such a protocol, through which a core network that can meet the requirements of economic efficiency, flexible expansion and support business service quality assurance can be established.
The goal of ONMP optical network management protocol system project is to realize intelligent optical transmission core network, adopt coverage model and out-of-band control signaling, support end-to-end optical path automatic request/allocation, and ensure end-to-end service quality. With ONMP, optical network intelligence is assigned to network elements. Optical layer services can be defined by software and dynamically allocate optical network resources. It has changed from providing only transmission channels to providing comprehensive business solutions, making the optical network an intelligent and all-optical network that can provide various bandwidth applications and services, and ensuring the flexibility, reliability and scalability of the optical network. ONMP provides an intelligent platform for the new generation of optical networks.
Bell Laboratories (China) Branch won the Gold Medal of Bell Laboratories President, which is Lucent's highest award for R&D and the achievement of Bell Laboratories (China) Branch's four-year development. On March 23rd, 2000, Bell Laboratories established a new research institution-Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science [China]. This is the first time that Bell Labs has established a research institute outside the United States.
Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science (China) is an outstanding technology and innovation center, providing technical support for Lucent's commercial departments and customers in China and Asia-Pacific region. The Institute mainly devotes itself to the research in the field of applied technology, and transfers its applied technology to Lucent Products Department and Lucent Global Service Department (LWS) by developing applied ideas and realizing technical prototypes. Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science (China) not only carries out real innovation and applied research, but also devotes itself to basic research in the fields of Internet technology, software, wireless communication, optical network, computer science and applied mathematics. The institute relies on basic research and develops applications on this basis.
Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science (China) has carried out fruitful cooperation with scientific and educational circles in China. At the same time, the institute also actively provides support to various local departments of Lucent. The institute is cooperating with industries and universities in Australia and New Zealand, which provides new business opportunities for Lucent.
Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science (China) has established close cooperation with universities in China. Established three joint laboratories in cooperation with Tsinghua University; Cooperate with Institute of Software of Chinese Academy of Sciences to establish a joint laboratory; Cooperate with Fudan University to establish a joint laboratory. The research fields of these joint laboratories involve optical network, next generation Internet IPv6, wireless communication, software system and network analysis and design. At the same time, the Institute cooperates with the National Natural Science Foundation to support key projects and youth fund projects. Young and talented researchers in the institute work in different research fields, devote themselves to the development of science and technology, and strive to realize themselves in the field of scientific research.
Bell Laboratories Institute of Basic Science (China) has been committed to becoming the center of innovative technology and innovation, in order to strengthen the support for Lucent's business departments and customers in China and Asia-Pacific region. The Institute has carried out and completed many important research topics in the fields of all-optical network, next-generation Internet IPv6, wireless communication, communication and software system integration and interoperability. The research results of IP router test software system, optical network management protocol system and wireless communication system have been patented in the United States and China, and are being transformed into Lucent products department. The Institute is a world leader in system integration and interoperability. The IPv6 edge router with optical interface and wireless interface developed by the institute has successfully realized the interconnection with optical cross-connect equipment and wireless mobile communication equipment. In April, 20001,as the first batch of foreign-funded research institutions, the institute joined the next generation internet in China.
Since 2004, the research direction of the institute has turned to the research of innovative and applied technologies. Four ongoing applied research projects are progressing rapidly. In September, 2004, at the Applied Technology Exchange Day held at the headquarters of Bell Laboratories in Jasmine Mountain, USA, the Institute showed the technical prototypes of some projects, and many product departments and marketing teams of Lucent expressed great interest in the research projects undertaken by the Institute. On this basis, the institute will also cooperate with Lucent Global Service Department to provide professional services to customers. In order to support the research work of these projects and cater to the future convergence trend of telecommunications, the Institute has set up six functional groups: SIP/RTP, Multimedia, User Profile, Policy Support, Location and Security to carry out the research work in the above technical fields. These functional groups closely link applied technology with basic research and provide a unified platform for all applications.
