The Story of Yuan Nongping

Yuan Longping, 1930 was born in Beijing in September. His father Yuan Xinglie graduated from the Chinese Department of Southeast University. He is a typical China intellectual. His mother Hua Jing is from Yangzhou. She studied in an English missionary school since she was a child and can speak fluent English. Yuan Longping 1949 was admitted to the Department of Agriculture of Chongqing Xianghui University in August, and 1953 graduated from Southwest Agricultural College and was assigned to teach in Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan Province. 1964 started research on hybrid rice, 197 1 transferred to Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, 1978 was promoted to researcher.

Yuan Longping is a world-class agricultural scientist born and raised in China, the founder of hybrid rice research in China, and the first person in the world to successfully utilize the heterosis of rice. Yuan Longping's achievements are mainly manifested in the research, application and popularization of hybrid rice:

It was found in 1960 that natural hybrid rice plants showed obvious heterosis.

1964 put forward the idea of using rice heterosis and began the research of rice hybridization.

1973 cooperated with others to realize the matching of three lines of hybrid rice: sterile line, maintainer line and restorer line, and bred strong hybrid rice for the first time in the world.

1974 broke through the difficulties in seed production and developed a set of production techniques for indica hybrid rice, which made China's hybrid rice research lead in the world and became the first person to successfully cultivate indica hybrid rice in the world.

From 1976 to 1987, the planting area of hybrid rice he cultivated reached 1 1 100 million mu, increasing rice yield 1000 billion kg.

From 65438 to 0979, hybrid rice was transferred to the United States as the first agricultural technology patent in China.

Yuan Longping won the following honors for his outstanding contribution to hybrid rice research:

198 1 won the first national special invention award "the highest national science and technology award" in China.

1985 won the gold medal of "Outstanding Inventor" of the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization.

1987 was awarded the "Science Award" by UNESCO.

1988 won the ranking fund award of the British ranking fund foundation.

1989 was awarded the title of national advanced worker by the State Council.

199 1 was hired as the chief international consultant of FAO.

1993 won the Ginst Hunger Rescue Award.

1995 was elected as an academician of China Academy of Engineering; Won the "Medal of Honor for Food Security" issued by FAO.

1996 won the first Nikkei Asian Technology Development Award.

1997 was awarded the honorary title of "Pioneer Scientist" in Mexico.

1998 won the "Yue Guang International Rice Award".

1999 With the approval of the International Committee for Naming Small Celestial Bodies, an asteroid discovered by Schmidt CCD Asteroid Project Team of Beijing Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences was named "Yuan Longping Star".

Yuan Longping is the leader of biotechnology subject in the National High-tech "863" Program. He has written papers such as Key Techniques for High Yield of Hybrid Rice Seed Production, Practice and Theory of Hybrid Rice Cultivation, and edited the book Hybrid Rice. The hybrid rice he cultivated was called "Oriental Magic Rice", which ensured that China only used 7% of the world's land to feed 22% of the world's population. The annual increase in rice production is equivalent to solving the problem of feeding 60 million people every year. He has two wishes: one is to spread hybrid rice to the whole world, and the other is to make super hybrid rice successful and benefit all mankind.
