UTF-8 has become the default character encoding setting since Red Hat Linux 8.0. This has little effect on English users, but when the high-order characters of ISO/IEC 8859- 1 character set are used, the encoding method is completely different. For some French or Swedish users, this is an unpleasant move, because their old file system may become unstable under this setting. This problem can be solved by deleting ". "Lang" setting in UTF-8 ".
Version 8.0 is also the first release version to use the Bluecurve desktop theme.
Due to possible copyright or patent issues, Red Hat Linux does not contain many functions. For example, MP3 support in Rhythmbox and XMMS has been removed by Red Hat. It is suggested that users use Ogg Vorbis without copyright problems instead, but users can install MP3 support by themselves. Red Hat Linux also lacks NTFS support, but users who need it can install it themselves.
