Nokia patent library

Recently, Nokia, a veteran communication equipment manufacturer, initiated patent infringement lawsuits against OPPO in India, France, Britain and other countries. The industry speculates that this lawsuit may be related to 5G patents.

As of March, 20021year, Huawei patents accounted for about 18%, Qualcomm patents accounted for about 15%, Samsung patents accounted for about 13% and Nokia patents accounted for about 1 1%. Companies with enough 5G patents can cross-authorize each other to save costs and avoid patent disputes.

If a company doesn't have enough 5G patents, it can only pay patent holders patent fees. Therefore, it is normal for Nokia to charge 5G patent fees to OPPO, but the pricing power of related patents is in Nokia's hands. According to the charging standard of Nokia's 5G patent, Nokia's 5G patent fee is "piece-by-piece", and each 5G mobile phone using Nokia's 5G patent has to pay a patent fee of 3 euros, about 22.93 yuan.

According to the statistics of Counterpoint, an internationally renowned research institution, in the first quarter of 20021,the global smartphone shipments were 354.94 million units, among which OPPO ranked fourth with 1 1%, and sold 39,043,400 units. According to the patent fee of 3 euros per set, in just one quarter, OPPO needs to pay the patent fee of1.1713.02 million euros, which is about 8957532045 million yuan.

In the face of Nokia's lawsuit, OPPO responded that OPPO respects and protects the intellectual property rights of itself and third parties and has been committed to benign patent licensing cooperation in the industry. OPPO opposes unreasonable negotiation behaviors such as litigation as a tool.

It seems that OPPO does not recognize Nokia's 5G license fee, but what can it do? Nokia can not sell to OPPO related patents, but OPPO can not but sell 5G mobile phones! OPPO is also a big patent in China, but it still cannot escape the fate of being harvested.

At present, Huawei has the largest number of 5G patents. On March 16 this year, Huawei released the "White Paper on Innovation and Intellectual Property in 2020", which announced the charging standard of 5G multimode mobile phones for the first time: Huawei's patent licensing fee for a single mobile phone following the 5G standard is US$ 2.50, and provides a reasonable percentage rate suitable for the price of mobile phones.

In February 2020, Huawei sued Verizon, the largest telecommunications company in the United States, and 12 patented technologies involving optical transmission were infringed. Recently, the case was officially opened, and Huawei demanded compensation of $65.438 billion.

Apple and Samsung pay hundreds of millions of dollars in patent fees to Huawei every year, which is inseparable from Huawei's annual research and development funds of hundreds of billions, while other domestic mobile phone manufacturers can use the developed technology without investment. Isn't it natural to pay patent fees?

From the following of the 2G era to the breakthrough of the 3G era, from the synchronization of the 4G era to the leading of the 5G era. It is precisely because of companies like Huawei that China's communication industry has overtaken the curve and come to the forefront of the world. You will be beaten if you fall behind. Only by holding your destiny firmly in your own hands can you avoid being bullied. When foreign companies wave "patent sticks" at us, only by strengthening themselves will they not be "stuck in the neck" by others.

Do you think Huawei should charge royalties from domestic mobile phone manufacturers? Will domestic mobile phone manufacturers pay Huawei 5G patent fees? I look forward to your wonderful comments!
