You are left alone by your mentor. Waiting for your mentor’s guidance is like waiting for a ship at the airport.
Completely free-range means that only directions are given, but no guidance is given. There are no group meetings or conferences. Teachers only spend most of the week on campus and basically don’t see anyone. There are very few trivial matters. There is nothing else except sometimes filing an account. Of course, no benefits are given. Every month, there is only the 500 subsidy issued by our country. The teacher didn't take a look at the paper, and the entire paper was written on my own. Everyone in the research team studies different things, and there is no communication at all in academic research.
Based on the twists and turns I have taken in my career as a graduate student, I would like to speak to graduate students who are under stress in terms of study and psychology, to prevent you from taking the same twists and turns I have taken again. Reduce your academic research expectations
You must have fellow graduate students, and they must also have mentors. Their mentors are likely to be the same as yours, and they are likely to be interested in their academic research. Provide considerate guidance. In this case, you don't have to wait for results that are as hard as those you put in, but compared to students with tutors, the external environment is not as good as others and it is difficult to compare. Therefore, there is no need to have high hopes for academic research, as long as you can graduate from university. Gladly accept worse results
Such a teacher will not give you guidance on your thesis or allow you to write a patent, because he will not even let you pay the cost of patent application. This will cause your performance to be inferior to others, and you will definitely be lame when it comes to academic scholarships and excellence. Such a situation is inevitable, and all you need to do is accept it. Failure to accept it will always make your psychological state more difficult. Don’t be too diligent
As mentioned before, your diligent efficiency is different from the students who are guided by others. You may learn something for ten hours a day, but it's still not as good as someone else's guided writing for three hours. I was deeply involved in this circle at that time. What I thought was, so what if some of you are guiding me, even if my environment is not as good as yours, I will still destroy you. This kind of mentality has really devastated me for a long time. I have been negative and pessimistic: Why can't I do as well as others despite putting in so much hard work? It is really difficult.
Remember, this is not entirely your fault, because your environment is not as good as others. In this case, the matter can only be solved from the root: no need to work hard. I only learn three points every day, spend time learning software, learn programming, develop fitness training, and strengthen exercise. This will not make you better at academic research, but it will make you mentally balanced. Is it good or bad to be molded by a mentor?
Different people have different personal experiences, and no one can comment on them. The editor saw these three people with their own eyes. When they were left alone by their mentors, they experienced confusion and struggle, thought about giving up, and briefly gave up on themselves.
Some people have ideals and want to achieve great results, but they are unable to withstand the difficulties of reality and have a bumpy road to study;
Some people have never thought of embarking on a career path. On the academic road, I found my heart by mistake;
When some people find that they are not suitable for the scientific research path, they stop their losses in time and find a path suitable for their own development.
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what’s next. What we can do is to believe in ourselves, hope for tomorrow, and take life seriously. Being cared for by a mentor is just an episode in life, not the main theme.
