Northwestern University was founded in 1902 as the Shaanxi University Hall and the Capital University Hall. It was first called Northwest University in 1912. In 1923 it was changed to National Northwest University. In 1937, the National Peking University, Peking Normal University, Beiyang Institute of Technology and Peking Research Institute, which moved west to Shaanxi, formed the National Xi'an Temporary University.
