If large animals are attacked, several groups of red-bellied piranhas will gather together to feed crazily; But this situation is rare. Red-bellied piranhas like to attack prey of the same size or smaller than themselves. Under normal circumstances, a group of red-bellied piranhas are often scattered around looking for prey. When the fish in charge of reconnaissance finds its prey, it will attack it and send a signal to its companions. They may send out auditory signals, because the red-bellied piranha has extremely sensitive hearing. Every fish in a group of red-bellied piranhas rushed to their prey, took a bite, and swam away to make way for other companions. However, most piranhas never attack large animals, and piranhas rarely attack people. Although piranhas are attracted by the smell of blood, they eat more carrion than they kill prey.

About 12 species of piranha belonging to the genus Catoprion are called hooded piranhas. They can survive by biting a small bite from the fins or scales of other fish, but the bitten fish can recover completely after swimming.

This fish lives in the Amazon River and Orinoco River basins and is famous for its fierceness.
