On August 11, at the 12th Automotive Blue Book Forum, Wang Jun, President of Huawei Smart Car Solutions BU, shared Huawei’s two strategies in the automotive field.
First, Huawei will use ICT technology to create components with better performance and lower prices; second, it will develop underlying software on a large scale. At the same time, Wang Jun believes that models priced between 300,000 and 500,000 will become fast-moving consumer goods in the future. Wealthier consumers will quickly change their cars to experience new technologies and features.
Wang Jun revealed that Huawei has an optoelectronic technology research center in Wuhan with a total of more than 10,000 people. The center is developing lidar technology, with the goal of quickly developing a 100-line lidar in the short term. In the future, there are plans to reduce the cost of lidar to US$200 (approximately RMB 1,390) or even US$100 (approximately RMB 695).
Lidar is a comprehensive light detection and measurement system that emits and receives laser beams, analyzes the retracement time after the laser encounters the target object, and calculates the relative distance between the target object and the car. Currently, 8-line, 16-line, and 32-line laser radars are commonly used. The more lidar harnesses there are, the higher the measurement accuracy and the safer the car will be when driving. The point cloud data scanned by lidar obtains a three-dimensional model of the environment, which has excellent performance and is the core sensor for realizing L4/L5 level autonomous driving. But the price is thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, which is significantly higher than other sensors.
“Everyone talks about how to surpass Tesla. Tesla does not use lidar. Among other reasons, there is another reason because it is expensive.” Wang Jun said. Previously, Huawei has applied for a number of patents related to smart cars, including autonomous driving, 5G, etc.
Wang Jun said: "In fact, there is no distinction between traditional companies and new power companies in the automobile industry. Whether it is a fuel vehicle or an electric vehicle, it must become intelligent. Only intelligence will bring the most direct benefits to users. Experience." He believes that the domestic auto market will not be dominated by a few players in the future, because the domestic auto market has enough space for more players to play a role.
