What is a tripartite patent?

"Tripartite patent" refers to the patent seeking protection in the world's three largest markets (the United States, the European Union and Japan).

According to statistics, from 2000 to 20 10, the total number of global tripartite patents increased slowly from 45,000 to 49,000. During this period, the number of patents in the United States, the European Union and Japan is roughly the same, fluctuating around 14000. Among them, the proportion of tripartite patents in the United States remained between 27% and 30% in 2000. South Korea's application growth is much faster than the overall growth, and its proportion of tripartite patents has doubled from 2% to 4%. During this period, applications from other countries still account for less than 1% of all the three-party patents. Generally speaking, despite the increasing patent activities in China, Indian and Korean regions, the performance on this indicator is still not good.
