At present, the college has four master's degree authorization points in the first-class discipline of material science and engineering, material physics and chemistry, material processing engineering, material science and road material science and engineering. There are four undergraduate majors: material forming and control engineering, material forming and control engineering (direction of road engineering materials), inorganic non-metallic material engineering and industrial engineering. At present, the main research directions of the discipline include the structure and performance of road materials, the development and application of new road materials, chemical surface heat treatment of materials, thermal spraying technology, wear-resistant spray welding technology and coating research, micro-arc oxidation surface technology of light alloys, nano-materials, functional materials, environmental materials, biomaterials, energy materials, mineral composite materials and so on. Especially, it has strong research strength in the development and application of cement concrete pavement materials, asphalt and asphalt mixture materials, soil reinforcement and semi-rigid pavement base materials, and new road materials. It is at the domestic advanced level in surface engineering and wear-resistant materials research, and has obvious characteristics in the fields of heat insulation materials, composite sealing materials and fiber concrete materials. In the past three years, the college has undertaken nearly 40 national and provincial key projects, won 22 awards at or above the provincial level, and won 29 patents for inventions and utility models. Teachers have published more than 400 academic papers in core journals and foreign journals, including nearly 200 by EI and more than 50 by SCI.

The College of Materials Science and Engineering was formed by the merger of the Road Materials Teaching and Research Section of the former Highway College, the Materials Department of the Construction Machinery College and the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the Resources College. Relying on the superior discipline of engineering in our university, the college carries out the teaching and research work of materials science and engineering. It is a teaching and research college that pays equal attention to basic and applied research, has strong strength in the fields of material surface engineering, composite materials and functional materials, and has outstanding advantages in the research and development of transportation materials.
The faculty structure of the college is reasonable and the overall level is high. Among the teachers, 65% have doctoral degrees and 56% have senior titles. Some teachers were selected into the National Million Talents Project in the New Century, the Million Talents Project of the Ministry of Communications, the Excellent Talents Program of the Ministry of Education, the "Three Five-Year Plans" of Shaanxi Province, and school-level teaching masters, and two of them enjoyed special government allowances.
