Recently, Dr. Schuchat, deputy director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bluntly told the media that "due to the rapid spread and wide range of COVID-19, the epidemic situation in the United States is out of control".

Judging from the development trend, it is true. According to the statistics of Johns Hopkins University, as of the morning of June 30th, local time, there were more than 2.68 million confirmed cases in COVID-19, with129,500 deaths. In the past week, the number of new cases in COVID-19 increased by 42% year-on-year to about 38,200.

The situation is so grim that it is difficult to restart the economy. According to the timetable of American media on June 30th, at least 16 states, including Texas and Florida, suspended their plans to restart their economies because the COVID-19 epidemic reached a new peak.

The epidemic has affected all aspects of the whole society, even the three major storage giants in the United States, Dell EMC, NetApp and HPE, have also been greatly affected.

Recently, Gartner, a global authoritative analysis organization, released the external storage market share report for the first quarter of 2020. According to the report, the revenues of Dell EMC, NetApp and HPE all dropped significantly, by 1 1%, 16% and 19% respectively.

The American storage giant ushered in a dark moment, but Huawei, a technology company from China, showed its toughness against the trend.

In the first quarter of 2020, despite the impact of the epidemic, Huawei still achieved a high-speed growth of 24.7%, ranking first in the growth rate.

Specific to different regions, in China, which was most affected by the epidemic in the first quarter, Huawei still maintained a revenue growth of 15.4%, ranking first in China. In overseas markets, Huawei achieved a growth rate of 38.5%, ranking first in overseas markets.

It is not difficult to see that Huawei has turned over a number of overseas giants and become the only bright color in the global storage market. In Huawei, the epidemic situation or the number of giants are not reasons to stop fighting. On the contrary, the more difficult it is, the more it is necessary to turn the crisis into an opportunity.

You know, before this, three American storage giants dominated the global storage market, among which Dell EMC was the strongest.

In the 9 1 1 incident, Dell EMC helped Morgan Stanley to resume all its business within 24 hours, which made it famous. Subsequently, Dell EMC completed a series of acquisitions, "quickly completed the role change from a high-end storage vendor to a storage giant, and began a fifteen-year storage overlord career".

According to the report data released by authoritative analyst IDC, in the first quarter of 2020, Dell EMC remained the largest enterprise external storage system manufacturer, accounting for 33.2% of global revenue, NetApp ranked second with 1 1.0% revenue share, followed by HPE/ Xinhua III with a share of 9.9%.

In the face of American giants, Huawei is helpless and can only rely on technology research and development and continue to cultivate. You may not imagine that at the beginning of the journey, you can use "a blue road" to describe it.

In 2002, Huawei began to invest in the storage business, "the team adds up to more than a dozen people", but the pre-research products must be developed within one year.

What do we do? Huawei Storage's first thought is to cooperate with scientific research institutions in universities. Therefore, Huawei Storage cooperated with Professor Xie Changsheng of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (later renamed Huazhong University of Science and Technology) and began to build a pre-developed storage system based on standard server+commercial FC card+open source RAID code +Cache/SCSI components.

After a year of hard work, the storage prototype was finally developed successfully and passed the management acceptance. In the following year, in 2003, Huawei Storage officially started research and development.

By 2005, Huawei completed the research and development of dual-control storage system, which means that Huawei's storage research and development has achieved a staged victory.

Since then, the strength of technology research and development has accumulated over time, becoming more and more abundant. At present, Huawei has 12 R&D centers around the world, with more than 4,000 engineers engaged in storage research and development and more than 800 storage patents. Huawei OceanStor storage Dorado series all-flash memory won the best exhibition award again at Interop Tokyo 2020, the largest ICT exhibition in Japan.

Thanks to the investment of R&D, Huawei storage has exploded with amazing energy, which is not only favored by many users at home and abroad, but also has a rising market share. In 20 19, Huawei ranked the top four in the global market share, while in the China market, Huawei ranked first for consecutive 19 quarters.

In this regard, Zhou Yuefeng, vice president of Huawei cloud computing BG and president of data storage and machine vision product line, admits: "Huawei will become the world's number one storage vendor just around the corner."

According to Huawei's long-term technology research and development, especially the current rapid growth rate, and the weak development of the three giants in the United States, Huawei storage will pursue victory and eventually stand at the top of the global storage market.

This day is accelerating.
