The World Intellectual Property Organization's Handbook of Industrial Property Information and Documentation divides patent families into six categories: simple patent families, complex patent families, extended patent families, domestic patent families, internal patent families and artificial patent families.
1. Simple patent family
In the same patent family, members of the patent family take the same patent application or several patent applications as the priority, and such a patent family is a simple patent family.
2. Complex patent family.
In the same patent family, members of the patent family obtain at least one patent application with the same priority, and such a patent family is a complex patent family.
3. Expand the patent family.
In the same patent family, each patent family member and at least one other patent family member in the group take at least one patent application as priority, and the patent family they form is an extended patent family.
4. National patent family.
Domestic patent family refers to the patent documents of the same country in the same patent family, which belong to supplementary patent, continuous application, partial continuous application, divisional application and so on. The same original application, but not including the patent documents published by the same patent application at different stages of examination and approval.
5. Internal patent family
Internal patent family refers to a group of patent documents published by only one patent institution in different examination and approval procedures for the same original application.
6. Artificial patent family
Artificial patent family is also called intelligent patent family and unconventional patent family, that is, the content is basically the same, but it is not based on one or several patent applications with the same * * *, but is manually classified according to the technical content of patent documents, forming a group of patent families composed of patent documents published in different countries, but in fact there is no priority relationship between these patent documents.
