The history of the invention of zipper

Zipper has become an indispensable part of people's life since it came out, and it is one of the most important and practical inventions in the last century.

Who invented the zipper? There is no doubt that patent retrieval is an effective way.

This year, Stephen of the British Library? Fan? Written by Stephen ·UAN· Durkheim, written by new york University Press and Barnes &; NOBLE) published the 2007 edition of 100 inventions that influenced the world in the 20th century, starting with patents, seeking the roots of 100 major inventions in the last century. The author thinks Gideon? Debacker 1965438+ filed on August 27th, 2004, and American patent 12 1988 1 approved on March 20th, 2007 (British patent GB 122665438).

Inventor Debacker 1880 was born in Sweden. He is an electrical engineer. He was interested in machinery since he was a child. /kloc-immigrated to the United States in 0/905 and soon began to invent zippers. After five years of hard work, he filed the above patent application.

The specification of U.S. PatentNo. (including the claims) and the attached drawings US 12 1988 1 record the following main contents about the zipper created by the present invention.

1. The zipper consists of a pair of flexible fabric belts, zipper teeth, sliders and limit blocks, which are staggered and fixed on the shuttle edges of a pair of fabric belts; The free end of each fastener element on one side of the fabric belt is provided with an annular groove, and the free end of each fastener element on the other side of the fabric belt is provided with a convex part, and the peripheral interfaces are consistent with each other; The sliding block guides the movement so that the chain teeth on one side and the chain teeth on the other side alternately mesh.

Second, a pair of fabric strips are each equipped with a row of fastener elements.

One end of the fastener is clamped on the shuttle edge of the fabric belt and radially extends out of the free end, and the top of the free end is a circular protrusion and the bottom is a circular groove, so that the circular protrusion and the circular groove have corresponding slopes, and the fasteners on both sides are staggered and corresponding; When the grooves and protrusions of the zipper elements at both sides are firmly and alternately engaged together under the guidance of the slider.

3. The slider is a stamped part, and the top of the upper part is connected with a cam cap and fixed by rivets; The lower part is composed of Y-shaped double-sided folded side plates.

A channel is formed between two Y-shaped side plates to clamp both sides of the fastener elements, an I-shaped part at the lower part of the Y-shaped channel forms a fastener element engagement channel at both sides, a bifurcated part at the upper part forms a separation channel at both sides of the fastener elements, and the head part is provided with a pull tab.

With the help of the pull tab, the chain teeth can be engaged when sliding, and then disengaged when sliding backwards.

4. The front and rear ends of the fastener elements of the zipper tape are equipped with different limit stops. The front stoppers are respectively fixed at the front ends of the zipper tapes and can enter the bifurcated parts of the stoppers to limit the slider from being pulled forward again; The rear stop head fixes the two fabric strips behind the fastener elements and can enter the I-shaped part at the lower part of the slider, thus preventing the slider from being pulled back.

The rear stop is a fixed part, so the zipper can only be pulled out from the front stop.

The zipper of this patent is simple, exquisite and reliable with high lateral tensile strength.

This is a great milestone in the birth of zipper. Before the invention of zipper, people mainly used buttons and fasteners to wear clothes and shoes. With the appearance of riding boots, the use of iron hook fasteners has become cumbersome and inconvenient.

/kloc-In the mid-9th century, some patent applications for zippers appeared in the United States and Europe, but some of them were just ideas and never implemented. Some applications are being realized, but they have not been commercialized.

One of the most valuable is whitcomb? Judson (1893), the patent application of U.S. PatentNo. US504038, put forward the idea of opening and closing a series of fastener tapes by moving the slider along the seam, and made it on the shoes to be exhibited at the Chicago World Expo, which attracted people's attention, but it was not accepted by the market because of its bulkiness, loose overlapping of fastener tapes, easy bouncing off, unsmooth slider movement and difficult manufacturing.

Gideon. Debacker's patent invention overcomes the above defects, and the key is the ingenious design of zipper teeth, which makes the zipper have practical value.

Then, he developed a stamping part and a machine to install the chain teeth on the belt.

1920 or so, zippers quickly swept the world and were widely used in clothes, boots, sachets and so on.

With the development of science and technology and the continuous improvement of human needs, patent applications and inventions on zipper, zipper manufacturing technology and manufacturing equipment emerge in an endless stream, and zipper materials have also developed from the initial metal materials to non-metallic materials such as nylon. Zipper structure has developed from a single closed zipper to three categories: closed zipper, open zipper and double zipper. Injection molding and continuous injection molding technology greatly improve the production efficiency of zipper. The varieties, specifications, colors and functions of zippers are changing with each passing day, and they are widely used in military, civil, agriculture and animal husbandry, medical care, aerospace, aviation and other fields.

Gideon Sundback, (1880- 1954), is a Swedish American inventor.

From 1906 to 19 14, I made great progress in zipper development and applied for a patent during my work for the company that later became Tailong Co., Ltd.

The name "zipper" was invented by B.F. goodrich, who used the device invented by Debacker in their new boots.

At first, zippers were mainly used for boots and cigarette bags, and they became popular in the fashion world twenty years later.

Debacker also invented a machine for making zippers.
