1. Invention patent: the protection period is 20 years.

2. Design: automatic protection for 5 years from the date of application, which can be extended for 4 times, each time for 5 years, with the longest period not exceeding 25 years.

The Belgian Patent Office conducts formal examination of invention patents and design patents.

Belgian patent law defines design as "a new and original design that combines the lines, patterns, shapes, positions or three-dimensional shapes and colors of products."

Belgian designs can be registered and protected at the Intellectual Property Office (BOIP) in Biluho. The Biluhe Intellectual Property Office is supervised by the Biluhe Economic Union Management Committee and is responsible for the design and trademark registration and protection of Belgium, Luxembourg and Belgium. The design approved by BOIP automatically takes effect in these three countries.
