Introduction to the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering of Lanzhou Jiaotong University

The Department of Electrical Engineering, the predecessor of the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering, was one of the first five departments established when Lanzhou Railway Institute was founded in 1958. That year, the first batch of undergraduate students in communications and signals and students in the electric locomotive specialization class were recruited. Subsequently, 6 undergraduate students in communications and railway signaling and 2 undergraduate students in electric locomotive were recruited. During the Cultural Revolution, colleges and universities across the country stopped enrolling students from 1966 to 1970. From 1971 to 1976, our department recruited workers, peasants, and soldiers majoring in wired communications and railway signaling. In 1977, enrollment in colleges and universities was resumed across the country, and our department continued to recruit students majoring in two undergraduate majors: wired communications and railway signaling. In 1979, the State Education Commission began professional adjustment and discipline construction, and began to recruit master's and doctoral students. In 1980, our department began to recruit master's students.

In 1979, with the approval of the Education Department of the Ministry of Railways, the undergraduate major of automatic control was established and enrollment began that year. Since the Department of Electrical Engineering only admitted three undergraduate majors: wired communications, railway signaling, and automatic control, it was renamed the Department of Telecommunications and Automatic Control in 1982, referred to as the Department of Telecommunications. In 1985, with the approval of the Education Department of the Ministry of Railways, the undergraduate major of computer application was established. In 1992, the Ministry of Education formulated a catalog for recruiting students by major category. The two undergraduate majors of Railway Signaling and Automatic Control in the Department of Telecommunications were merged into the automation category, and students were recruited according to the automation major. In 1993, the original Railway Signaling Major was renamed as the Automatic Control Major, and the original Automatic Control Major was renamed as the Industrial Automation Major, referred to as the Automation Major. In September 2012, the Automatic Control Major was renamed Rail Transit Signaling and Control. (The fourth revision of the catalog of undergraduate majors in ordinary colleges and universities, major code 080802T). In 1997, higher education across the country carried out a large-scale expansion of enrollment, further adjusted undergraduate majors, and implemented a two-level management system of schools and colleges. In 1999, Professor Ren Enen and others founded the undergraduate major of electrical engineering and automation. In 1999, the Department of Telecommunications was renamed the School of Information and Electrical Engineering, referred to as the School of Information and Telecommunications. In 2002, it was approved by the Gansu Provincial Department of Education to apply for an undergraduate major in electronic science and technology, and enrollment began in 2003. In 2003, it was approved by the Gansu Provincial Department of Education to apply for an undergraduate major in electronic information engineering, and enrollment began in 2004. In 2003, it successfully applied for a doctoral program in Traffic Information Engineering and Control, and began to recruit doctoral students in 2004. With the continuous expansion of enrollment and professional settings, by 2006, the School of Information and Telecommunications had more than 3,500 on-campus and junior college students, with 7 undergraduate majors, 9 second-level master's degree programs, and one second-level doctoral degree program. In June 2006, according to the professional characteristics of the college, in order to facilitate management and enhance the strength of running the school, the school divided the School of Information and Telecommunications into two secondary colleges: the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering and the School of Electronics and Information Engineering.

In the early days of the establishment of the school, the Department of Electrical Engineering was composed of 30 professors from Beijing and Tang Dynasties, including wired communication expert Professor Sun Qiyin, electrical machine expert Professor Jiang Jiayou, radio technology expert Professor Ban Jichao, and railway signal expert Professor Wang Zhonglin. Staff organization was established. It consists of four teaching and research departments: communications, signals, locomotives, and electrical engineering. Professor Sun Qiyin is the first department director, and teacher Li Chongan is also the party branch secretary. That year, our department recruited more than 50 undergraduate students in communications and signals, and more than 30 students in the electric locomotive specialization class. Enrollment was expanded in 1959 and 1960. The undergraduate majors in Communications and Signals each enrolled three small classes, and the undergraduate major in Electric Locomotive Power Supply enrolled one small class. In the two years, 196 and 233 students were enrolled respectively. The second half of 1960 coincided with the "double reform" activities of teaching reform and technological innovation. The school selected some students from the 58th, 59th and 60th grades of the department and external departments to establish the "No. 2" and "No. 3" majors. In 1961, when the national economy encountered difficult times, the "No. 2" major was changed to the Signal major, and the "No. 3" major was changed to the Communications major.

With the lofty ambition of building the motherland, teachers and students work hard, work hard, study hard, and study rigorously, forming a good school style. During the three years of natural disasters from 1960 to 1962, the teachers and students of the Department of Electrical Engineering continued to run the school under extremely difficult conditions. In 1962, major adjustment was carried out, and the power supply major was cancelled. Students in this major were transferred to the signal major. Later, the electric locomotive major was discontinued, and all the electric locomotive level 61 students were transferred to Tangyuan to study. In the same year, Gansu University of Technology was disbanded and some students transferred to the Department of Electrical Engineering to study.

At that time, the school was moving from the old site on Tianshui Road to the new site in Anning District. Due to the shortage of transportation means and energy, all the teachers and students of the department carried forward the spirit of hard work and moved some teaching equipment and living facilities on their shoulders and hands. Go to the new school site in Anning District. In order to survive the difficult period, some teachers and students went to Xinglong Mountain and other places to collect acorns and wild vegetables to survive the famine. The hardship was unforgettable. During this period, teachers and students carried forward the spirit of the Yan'an Anti-University and were self-reliant. They also participated in a large amount of school construction work and laboratory construction work, which laid a good foundation for the establishment of the Department of Electrical Engineering and the construction and development of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Development has taken a lot of hard work.

From 1964 to 1966, the rural socialist education movement was carried out across the country. Students from the 60th, 61st, 62nd and 63rd grades of the Department of Electrical Engineering and some teachers went to Zhangye, Qingyang, Pingliang and other places to participate in this movement. After the electric locomotive major was cancelled, more than ten of its relevant teachers were transferred to Tangyuan Institute of Technology, Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Factory and scientific research institutes. After the start of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the school stopped enrolling students. In 1967, classes were suspended to make a revolution. In 1968, classes were resumed to make a revolution. With the joint efforts of teachers and students in the entire department, a communication department was established among students in grades 64 and 65. The small team and the signal company carried out production work and practical teaching at the same time, creating a good learning atmosphere for the 64th and 65th grade students, minimizing the losses of class suspension, and benefiting these two students a lot in their subsequent work. . In 1971, "worker, peasant, and soldier students" began to be recruited into the university. From 1971 to 1976, more than 580 students were recruited in the two majors of communications and signals. Under specific historical conditions, due to the large differences in educational levels, we should start with tutoring necessary basic cultural knowledge, highlight production practices, and learn professional knowledge. Teachers and students went to Shanghai Communications Factory and other railway sites to gain perceptual knowledge, went to Zhongwei, Pingdingshan Fertilizer Plant special lines, Shanghai-Nanjing Line and other places for construction, participated in the study of professional knowledge such as automatic fault testing of Longxi vertical and horizontal switches, and went to Jiuquan Tank Corps Conduct military training. These students have grown rapidly and have been well trained in both professional knowledge and practical experience. After graduation, they have become the backbone of various road bureaus, stations and local departments.

In 1977, the college entrance examination system was restored nationwide, and the Department of Electrical Engineering welcomed the first batch of undergraduate students, namely Tong 77 and Xin 77. In the autumn of 1978, Tong 78 and Xin 78 were admitted. In order to strengthen the teaching staff, the school transferred students from various departments to establish an electronic teaching class in the Department of Electrical Engineering. In 1979, Professor Ban Jichao and others founded the undergraduate major of automatic control (renamed industrial automation major after 1993, referred to as automation major). In order to meet the needs of social development at that time, the college began to recruit electrical cadres in 1984. In 1985, Professor Shi Tianbao and others founded the undergraduate major of Computer and Its Applications. In 1988 and 1989, he also trained two classes of communications and signals undergraduate majors in 1984 and 1985 for Beijing Union University. In the spring admissions of 1993, he enrolled two more classes. In the twenty years from 1977 to 1997, the school's education has developed rapidly. In addition to hosting four undergraduate majors, the Department of Telecommunications also offers four majors: multi-channel communications, electrical technology, computer applications and automatic control. Specialized courses for junior college and electrical service cadres, as well as adult education and correspondence education.

After 1997, higher education across the country carried out a large-scale expansion of enrollment. In 1999, Professor Ren Enen and others founded the electrical engineering and automation major; from 2002 to 2003, the College of Information and Telecommunications successfully applied for the electronic science major. with two undergraduate majors in technology and electronic information engineering. At this time, the School of Information and Telecommunications developed from four undergraduate majors before 1997 to seven undergraduate majors. The number of full-time undergraduate and junior college students has grown from more than 1,700 in 1997 to more than 3,500, making it the largest secondary college of Lanzhou Jiaotong University.

Reform and opening up, deepening education and teaching reform have enabled the Department of Telecommunications to develop rapidly in terms of professional settings. At the same time, in terms of subject degree construction, scientific research, teaching material construction, laboratory construction and teaching staff construction, etc. It has also grown rapidly and produced fruitful results.

In 1981, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the discipline of railway transportation automation and control became the first batch of master's degree awarding points in my country. Previously, Professor Ban Jichao enrolled the first batch of graduate students in 1980, and Professors Ban Jichao and Sun Qiyin enrolled the second batch of graduate students in 1981.

The discipline of railway transportation automation and control was later renamed as the discipline of transportation information engineering and control, and was designated as a provincial key discipline; in 1995, a new master's degree awarding point in communication and information systems was added; in 1998, a new discipline was added in computer application technology and control There are two master's degree granting points in theory and control engineering; in 2003, it achieved leapfrog development in the discipline degree construction and achieved brilliant results. First, the transportation information engineering and control discipline obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees and recruited doctoral students in 2004. At the same time, the first-level discipline of transportation, jointly developed by our school and the Institute of Automation and Control, the School of Transportation, and the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, was successfully developed. It was selected as a provincial discipline, and its subordinate secondary disciplines Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Communication and Information Systems, and Computer Application Technology were also selected as provincial key secondary disciplines; in the same year, power electronics and electric transmission, pattern recognition and intelligence were also added. There are 5 master's degree programs in control, detection technology and automation devices, computer software and theory, circuits and systems, totaling 1 doctoral program and 9 master's degree programs. In terms of teaching material construction, the transistor circuit textbook written by Professor Ban Jichao was taught among students in 1963 and has been very popular among students. This course was also in a leading position in the country at that time and promoted the construction of teaching materials in our department. Since the reform and opening up, our department has participated in the Teaching and Textbook Steering Committee organized by the Education Department of the Ministry of Railways. In 1992, two professors, Dong Baosheng and Chen Zhen, edited the integrated circuit textbook, which was published by Railway Press; in 1993, Professor Ni Xiayu participated in the He compiled a volume on telecommunications networks, published by Southwest Jiaotong University Press, and won the second prize for national teaching achievement in 1997. As of 2005, our school has published 44 academic monographs, translations and college textbooks; at the same time, it actively participated in the establishment of education reform projects and won one second-class national teaching achievement award, six first-class and second-class provincial teaching achievement awards. Five first prizes; six first prizes and five second prizes for school teaching achievements; and published more than 500 academic papers.

In terms of laboratory construction, after continuous reforms and updates, the teaching experimental equipment of each major has been fully equipped, and the required teaching experiment integrity rate is more than 90%. An electrical and electronic experimental center and professional laboratory have been established. Basic Experiment Center. On this basis, three provincial and ministerial key laboratories have also been established: the Gansu Provincial Key Laboratory of Plateau Traffic Information Engineering and Control, the Ministry of Railways Key Laboratory of Communications and Automation, and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Technology and Intelligent Control. Ensure the smooth progress of teaching and scientific research work.

In terms of teaching staff construction, in addition to the four professors in the early days of the school’s establishment, during the twenty years of reform and opening up from 1977 to 1997, 39 people with professional titles of associate professor or above were cultivated and promoted, including 13 professors, accounting for 10% of the total. More than 35% of the total number of teachers, the professional title structure tends to be reasonable; 20 middle-aged professors have been trained and promoted. What is more worth pointing out is that teachers with master's degree or above account for more than 60% of the total number of teachers, making the professional title structure of the teaching team more reasonable. The structure and academic qualification structure have become more reasonable, laying a solid foundation for improving teaching quality and school running standards.

While the scale of the Department of Telecommunications continues to expand, it has always adhered to rigorous scholarship, teaching and educating people, constantly improving the quality of teaching, working hard on the level and efficiency of running schools, and constantly deepening the reform of education and teaching. As science and technology and society continue to develop, new technologies, new theories, and new methods are developing by leaps and bounds. In order to meet the needs of development, four major revisions of the teaching plan were carried out from 1993 to 1998. Since then, the teaching plan has been revised many times year by year, with the purpose of making great efforts in cultivating talents, quality education, and innovative education to adapt to the needs of the market economy for talent training, and achieved great results. Electronic information students have achieved good results in various national competitions. For example, Dong Zhanjun, a class of ’89 student, won the second prize of the National College Student Computer Schindler Cup, ranking fourth in the country; Leng Hansheng, a class of ’90 student, won the second prize of the National Undergraduate Science and Technology Invention Award; Cao Shao, a class of ’93 student, won the national college student computer science and technology invention award in ’97 The College Student Challenge Cup Science and Technology Production Competition Award; Huang Kang, a classmate of 1993, won the Mao Yisheng Scholarship from the Ministry of Railways; the passing rate of the National CET-4 and CET-6 foreign language examinations has increased year by year, with an average passing rate of over 65%; students are participating in the provincial computer Ranked first in competitions many times; participated in the National Mathematical Modeling Competition, and many students won national first and second prizes and provincial special prizes, first and second prizes; and has participated in the National College Student Electronic Design Competition every two years since 2001. In the competition, six teams participated for four consecutive times and won the national second prize, the provincial special prize, the first and second prizes, and ranked first among universities in Gansu Province.

During their studies at school, in addition to learning professional and cultural knowledge, students also achieved comprehensive development in moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic aspects, formed a good school spirit and study style, and a number of advanced groups and individuals emerged. In 1994, the Youth League Committee of the Ministry of Railways named the Youth League Branch of the Department of Telecommunications as the Ministry's Advanced Youth League Branch; the Youth League branch of Class 91 was the advanced Youth League branch of the Ministry and the advanced class collective of the entire railway; Liu Liying, a classmate of Class 95, was awarded the title of Advanced Youth League Member by the Youth League Committee of the Ministry of Railways; Three students, Gao Fan (Grade 91), Tang Long (Grade 91), and Liu Jinmei (Grade 92), are among the three best students; the Youth League Committee of the College of Information and Telecommunications has been awarded the title of Gansu May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee for six consecutive years from 2000 to 2005; Class of 2000 Zhu Dan won the title of Three Good Students of Gansu Province in 2003; Automation Class 00-1 won the collective title of the province's advanced class in 2003; the "Three Represents" social practice service group of Party members and students of the College of Information and Telecommunications won the title of Excellent Social Activities in the Three Going to the Countryside during Summer Summer 2002 Team; the "Three Represents" social practice service team of college party members of the School of Information and Telecommunications to ethnic minority areas won the 2003 Gansu Province University and Vocational School Student Volunteers Excellent Team for Social Practice Activities in the Countryside for Three Summer Vacations.
