Yuan Longping, an academician of China Academy of Engineering, has been devoted to the research of hybrid rice since 1960s. After 12 years' efforts, he successfully cultivated "three-line hybrid rice". During the period from 1976 to 1987, the planting area of hybrid rice he cultivated reached 1 1 100 million mu, increasing the rice yield 1 100 million Jin. Therefore, the China Municipal Government awarded Yuan Longping the honorary titles of "National Advanced Scientist", "National Model Worker" and "National Advanced Worker". The United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization awarded him the Gold Medal and the honorary title of "Outstanding Inventor". International peers call him "the father of hybrid rice".

Yuan Longping,/kloc-0 was born in Beiping in September, 1930, and/kloc-0 was admitted to the Department of Agriculture of Chongqing Xianghui College in August, 1949. 1953 After graduation in August, he was assigned to teach at Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan Province. During the teaching career of 19, Yuan Longping engaged in production practice and scientific research topics, and began to embark on the road of crop breeding.

Due to the need of hybrid rice research, Yuan Longping 197 1 was transferred to Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in February to specialize in hybrid rice research. In order to strengthen and coordinate the scientific research of hybrid rice, Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, a national specialized research institution of hybrid rice, was established in June, 1984, and then the National Hybrid Rice Engineering and Technology Research Center was established, with Yuan Longping as its director. 1995 was elected as an academician of China Academy of Engineering.
