Xi'an Petroleum University is the only multi-disciplinary general institution of higher learning in the northwest region featuring petroleum and petrochemicals. The company's first colleges and universities were selected for high-level university construction projects during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period of Shaanxi Province. In 2000, it was transferred from being owned by China National Petroleum Corporation to being jointly constructed by the central and local governments, with Shaanxi Province in charge. In 2003, it was renamed Xi'an Petroleum University.
In response to the national energy strategy and regional economic and social development needs, the school vigorously carries out scientific research, and its scientific and technological strength continues to improve.
