South China University of Technology is the only key science and engineering university approved by the Ministry of Education that can recruit undergraduate majors in intellectual property. Guangdong province is a big province with intellectual property rights, with the number of patent applications ranking first in the country for eight consecutive years, and the number of registered trademarks and well-known trademarks has always been in the forefront of the country. According to the prediction of the Provincial Intellectual Property Office, the shortage of intellectual property talents in Guangdong Province is about 5,000-8,000, and at least 600 new intellectual property professionals are needed every year. Therefore, intellectual property talents are one of the most urgently needed talents in society.

The goal of the undergraduate major of intellectual property is to cultivate compound talents who master the basic knowledge of law, have strong theoretical literacy and practical operation ability of intellectual property, and master relevant scientific, technical, economic and management knowledge for the society. Students trained in this major: 1. Master the professional knowledge of law and intellectual property systematically, and have certain background knowledge of economy, management and science and engineering; 2. Strong theoretical analysis and practical skills of intellectual property rights; 3. Have a high level of foreign language, computer skills and good language expression skills.

On the basis of systematically studying the core courses of law, students majoring in intellectual property mainly study the following intellectual property professional courses: general theory of intellectual property, copyright law, patent law, trademark law, competition law, patent document retrieval and agency, intellectual property management, network law, science and technology law, e-commerce law and so on. In addition, students of this major should also take related courses such as science and engineering, economics and management.

After graduation, students are suitable to engage in work related to intellectual property rights in national legislatures, administrative organs, judicial organs and state administrative organs; Law firms, patent and trademark offices and other intellectual property intermediary service institutions and enterprise intellectual property management.
