BYD's New Action "Blade Battery"

On March 29th, BYD officially announced the launch of Ferrous lithium phosphate Blade Battery. And confirm that the new model "Han" will be equipped with blade batteries for the first time.

The so-called "blade battery" is named because it looks like a "blade". This kind of battery is arranged in array in the battery pack, which is the first appearance of BYD's new generation lithium iron phosphate battery.

so, how safe is this "blade battery"?

In order to further verify the safety of this battery, BYD conducted steel needle puncture experiments on ternary lithium battery, traditional Ferrous lithium phosphate block battery and "blade battery" respectively.

In the experiment, the ternary lithium battery exploded instantly, and the surface temperature of the battery exceeded 5 degrees. The traditional Ferrous lithium phosphate block battery has no open flame and smoke, and the surface of the battery is 2-4 degrees wet; The "blade battery" has no open flame and no smoke, and the surface temperature of the battery is 3-6 degrees.

The results show that "blade battery" has almost ended the safety pain point of "spontaneous combustion" of pure electric vehicles. It is necessary to know that the needle penetration test originally considers the safety of batteries in the most extreme cases. Although the spontaneous combustion of pure electric vehicles is a small probability event, once it happens, it will affect human life. The problem of ternary lithium battery is that it is difficult for people who spontaneously ignite vehicles to escape, and the performance of "blade battery" is gratifying.

In recent years, fire accidents of pure electric vehicles are common, and the spontaneous combustion of ternary lithium batteries caused by thermal runaway of battery cells is one of the important reasons.

In addition to the aging factors of battery cells, thermal runaway of battery cells can be caused by collision and impact on battery packs, overcharge and overdischarge, and improper use.

BYD's "blade battery" battery core adopts laminated structure and ceramic coating technology, which will not spontaneously ignite even if the battery core has internal short circuit, such as needle penetration test. In addition, the high temperature resistance of Ferrous lithium phosphate material itself further improves the safety of "blade battery". At the same time, the arrangement of "blade battery" in the battery pack has stronger impact resistance, extrusion resistance and puncture resistance compared with the traditional battery Bao Butong, in-line arrangement structure+high-temperature insulating ceramic protection+smoke separation channel design. In addition, the top and bottom of the battery cell are also protected by honeycomb structure, which further improves the rigidity of the whole battery pack.

As a new generation battery, BYD's "blade battery" is not only safe, but also has the following advantages compared with other power batteries:

First, it has a high cruising range. The "blade battery" through structural innovation does not need a "module". Compared with the traditional battery pack, the volume utilization rate is increased by more than 5%, and the cruising range has reached the same level as the high-energy ternary lithium battery. Take the upcoming BYD Han EV as an example, the energy density of the battery system reaches 14Wh/kg, the cruising range reaches 65km, and the acceleration of 1 km takes only 3.9s s..

secondly, the product quality is good. Because the battery pack has no intermediate structure of "module", the complexity of the battery system is greatly reduced, which also brings higher product stability and lower failure rate, and the product quality is further improved.

thirdly, the service life is long. In terms of life, BYD's "blade battery" can be charged and discharged more than 3, times and travel 1.2 million kilometers.
