Xiangtan University, referred to as "Xiangda University" for short, is a comprehensive national key university, a university jointly established by the Hunan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and a university jointly established by the Hunan Provincial People's Government and the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (Class A).

Erudition and perseverance renew virtue. Among them, "erudite and down-to-earth" comes from the Book of Rites, while "being virtuous and growing day by day" is translated into Zhouyi. The "golden mean" means "study, interrogate, think carefully, distinguish and practice." Therefore, taking "being knowledgeable and persevering" as the motto is actually designed for learning and has great encouraging significance and function for students.
