What is a limited slip differential?

The English name of limited slip major is Limited slip Professional, or LSD for short. Limited slip differential, as its name implies, is an improved differential to limit wheel slip. It is similar to a differential, which allows the speed difference between the driving wheels on both sides within a certain range to ensure normal cornering and other driving performance. In fact, LSD can be divided into several types according to different structures, and each LSD has its own characteristics.

At present, the steering design of vehicles is set according to Aikman's fifth wheel principle, that is, the steering angle of the inner wheel in the curve is greater than that of the outer wheel. According to the trigonometric function, the rotation distance of the inner wheel will be shorter than that of the outer wheel. Once the distance is different, it means that the speed of the inner and outer wheels (left and right wheels) is inconsistent. If the transmission shaft of the gearbox output does not separate the left and right outputs through the differential, the speed of the left and right wheels cannot be adjusted when the vehicle turns.

The left and right wheels of vehicles are definitely not coaxial, especially modern cars, which are mostly designed for front-wheel drive. Without the differential structure, the driver can't control the steering wheel at all, because as long as the driver turns the steering wheel, the tire will strongly push the steering wheel back to the center origin through the feedback force generated by the ground, so the control is impossible, so putting the differential in the center of the transmission wheel is an essential component of the transmission system.
