The 4680 battery is a patent of Panasonic.

According to overseas media reports in Reuters, Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic's energy business, revealed that the new battery model 4680 provided for Tesla has been provided to Tesla Motors. Trial production began in May, and it is planned to start production in factories in western Japan from April 2023 to the end of March 2024. It is reported that the output is 10 GWh/ year.

I believe everyone has heard of the 4680 battery. Last year, Tesla released this new battery model for the first time, and exhibited the cylindrical battery 4680 with a diameter of 46mm and a height of 80mm for the first time on the German Super Factory Open Day. In fact, cylindrical batteries were not favored by electric vehicles before. Difficulty in heat dissipation is its biggest shortcoming, and its safety is not easy to control. However, its biggest advantage is high energy density and larger output. In addition to Tesla, car companies choose to use square batteries with more suitable structures. Tesla also uses the most complicated battery management system in history and is considered to have handed over round batteries.

Compared with 1865 and 2170,4680, the battery is directly larger, higher in height and nearly five times larger in volume. It is said that this is also the critical point of cylindrical battery size, which is simulated by Tesla engineers with software. Such a large size, coupled with the elimination of new technologies such as ear pieces, the original battery pack needs 3000 batteries, and now the battery pack only needs more than 500 batteries, and the output is higher.

According to the overseas auto news, Panasonic's energy business is likely to expand to North America, and its production plant is likely to be located in Kansas or Oklahoma. By establishing a factory in North America, new batteries will be fully produced for Tesla. The new factory may start operation in 2024 at the earliest, and the battery production in North America may at least triple by 2029, which shows Tesla's emphasis on batteries.

Since 2009, Panasonic Energy has produced and delivered 4.6 billion 1865 batteries and 5.5 billion 170 batteries, totaling more than 100 billion batteries, equivalent to1700,000 batteries for electric vehicles. Moreover, the product quality is reliable and has not been recalled. At present, Tesla is not the only car company interested in batteries produced by Panasonic.
