In June 1996, Nintendo, which created the cross keys and L/R keys, once again added a new concept to the controller: the analog joystick. The N64 analog joystick that uses pressure-sensing technology is fundamentally different from previous joystick-type handles. Depending on how hard the player pushes the joystick, the speed of movement of the characters in the game will change accordingly.
Most game consoles that use a cross-button design place the cross-button on the left side of the control area just like the original G&W handheld console. Regardless of the ever-changing settings of the buttons on the right side, the placement of the cross-directional keys on the left side has almost never changed.
