Xu Biao's main achievements

He has been engaged in the research of basic theory of polymer material forming, polymer mechanochemistry, radiation chemistry and other fields for a long time.

Developing polymer materials

At the end of 1950s, Xu Biao clearly put forward that we should pay attention to the cross field of mechanics and polymer chemistry, and study the chemical processes and phenomena of polymer materials under stress, thus opening up a new way for the processing, molding and modification of polymer materials. At that time, foreign research in this marginal field was also in the exploratory stage. Xu Biao's work in this field was first paid attention to by famous American experts R.S.Porter and A.Casele in their monograph Stress Reaction of Polymers (Academic Press, 1979), and all the research results of Xu Biao in 1960s were reproduced. In the long-term work, Xu Xuan and his assistant have made 10 kinds of promising new polymer materials which are difficult to be synthesized by general chemical methods through various means, and put forward many new arguments. The research achievement "Degradation of polymer and block (grafting) * * * polymerization under ultrasonic irradiation" is recognized as reaching the international advanced level. This achievement provides a new way for the synthesis and application of efficient polymer surfactants for tertiary oil recovery.

Using * * * hybrid composite method to develop multi-component polymer materials can make up for the defects of single-component materials and tap the potential properties of materials. In China, Xu Biao systematically studied the chemical reactions, structural forms and rheological behaviors of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl chloride and acrylic resin 10 for the first time, which provided a series of theoretical basis with practical value. The annual output of polyolefin in the world accounts for about 1/3 of the total plastic output, but its poor toughness affects its application in engineering field. For many years, polyolefin toughening has been a hot topic in international polymer academic circles. Toughening can be achieved by adding elastomer, but the strength and thermal deformation temperature of the material will be greatly reduced. The toughness of polyolefin toughened by polymer Xu Biao can be improved by 5 ~ 20 times on the basis of keeping the strength of the material basically unchanged and good processability. This achievement has aroused great interest of experts and scholars at home and abroad.

Electrical conductivity is a research hotspot of polymer materials. Referring to the reports about the influence of crystallinity on the conductivity of metal materials, Xu Xuan proposed that the crystallinity of crystalline polyelectrolyte can be reduced and its conductivity can be improved through hydrogen bonding. He instructed students to study the hydrogen bonding of polyethylene oxide/poly (methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) system, and realized this idea, which greatly reduced the crystallinity of the material and increased the conductivity by 1 ~ 2 orders of magnitude. This achievement has played an important role in promoting the development of fast ion conductors. Published more than 200 research papers, published 4 works and translations, and applied for more than 20 patents; Won more than 20 national natural science awards and national invention awards.

From 1982 to 1992, Xu Biao participated in more than 20 international academic conferences and published more than 40 papers.

1960, Xu Jue compiled and published Principles of Polymer Chemistry of China University 1 textbook. At that time, the book became a widely used teaching material for polymer specialty in domestic schools, which was well received by teachers and students, ending the situation that all foreign books were used in the specialty and there were no Chinese books to read. After the "Cultural Revolution", Xu Xuan participated in the compilation of Encyclopedia of China, and served as the editor-in-chief and deputy editor-in-chief of Polymer Chemistry Branch of Chemical Volume. These two volumes have been published in 1987 and 1989 respectively. He also translated and published Chemistry of Polymer Degradation Process and Rheology of Polymer Processing. 1988 was hired as the consultant editor of International Polymer Series by Hansel Publishing House. 1984 and 1985, entrusted by the Ministry of Petroleum and sinopec group, two academic magazines, Oilfield Chemistry and Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, were founded, which were publicly distributed at home and abroad and served as the chief editors.
