Because patents and products are two different things, products can't be produced without patents. This article will be divided into two parts-
1. Why can't Huawei produce 5G mobile phones at this stage?
2. Why can't Huawei use the 5G patent to fight back and fight?
The first chunk: Why can't Huawei suddenly produce a 5G mobile phone?
Anyone who knows the mobile phone industry should know that in September, 2020, to be precise, in September of 15, the US chip ban on Huawei came into effect, and Huawei almost completely lost its ability to obtain chip OEM. Most of the chips in Kirin series are produced by TSMC working overtime. However, Huawei can still release and produce 5G mobile phones at this time. After all, it hoarded a large number of Kirin series chips before the ban came into effect, and it can still overcome the difficulties in a short time. Huawei Mate40 series is a typical example.
However, with the passage of time, in April, 20021,the United States launched a new round of sanctions against Huawei, also known as the fourth round of sanctions, demanding that "all equipment suppliers who supply Huawei shall not supply 5G equipment to Huawei as long as they involve products that adopt American technology."
Simply put, as long as a product is related to 5G and uses American technology, it cannot be supplied to Huawei. Therefore, we can find that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip used by Huawei P50 has actually been castrated, and it is a 4G chip, which is essentially affected by this ban.
You may ask, some of Huawei Mate40 series and P50 series sold at this stage are also equipped with Kirin 9000 chip. The baseband chip of this SOC can support 5G network, but why did the result become like this? The reason is concentrated on a very small device-filter.
The filter is a module concentrated in the RF front end. Its function is to eliminate unnecessary waves in the environment and only allow those waves to be accepted. To put it bluntly, all kinds of frequency bands commonly used in mobile phones rely on filters (some users asked me before, why are the frequency bands supported by two processors and mobile phones with the same baseband version so different? The reason is because of the filter).
In the 4G era, SAW technology is usually used in filters, and there are many companies in our country that can replace it, such as Maijie Technology and Zhuo Shengwei (the latter has been proved to be the supplier of Huawei P50 series RF front-end).
However, in the 5G era, BAW is the main filter, and there is no alternative solution in this field in China. More than 95% of the global market share is occupied by Broadcom and Qorvo. Unfortunately, they are all American companies, because they can't supply Huawei because of sanctions.
As for the reason, it is actually very simple. These enterprises all have very obvious characteristics of semiconductor industry-technology-intensive, capital-intensive, talent-intensive and patent gap. The first three of them can be completely solved according to the current scale of our country, but the difficulty lies in the last one-patent gap.
What do you mean? For example, when we do a math problem, there is a general calculation formula that everyone knows. Using this formula, we can easily solve this mathematical problem. But the patent of this algorithm is occupied by others. If you want to solve this problem, you must develop a new formula. The difficulty of the new algorithm is as you can imagine.
Of course, it is also reported that in the second half of 2022, domestic enterprises will overcome the technical problems related to 5G RF and start supplying Huawei. As for the truth, we will wait and see.
The second big block: Why can't Huawei use its own 5G patent to fight violence?
Some people will say that Huawei holds so many 5G patents, why can't it fight back through patent sanctions? In fact, Huawei really did this. Just last year, Huawei sued Verizon, one of the largest communication operators in the United States, demanding that it pay patent fees, and the claim cost was as high as $654.38 billion. Then, after several days of trial, Huawei and Verizon reached a settlement. Let's quote the report at that time:
It can be seen from the description and tone of both parties that Verizon finally compromised (Verizon was very tough before the trial), which is actually a typical case of using patented technology to fight back.
However, Huawei's necessary communication patents are not capable of becoming a moat level like Qualcomm. Huawei needs to exchange patents with Qualcomm and other communication companies while owning some necessary patents, so as to achieve patent balance. If Huawei rashly attacks other companies with patents, it will eventually bite itself and be branded as "patent coercion", which will not benefit Huawei. (In fact, to put it bluntly, it is caused by lack of ability. In those days, Qualcomm didn't give you this one. )
It's not that I don't support it. This news has been published many times. Under the sanctions of the United States, companies that have the ability to OEM chips cannot produce them. Huawei has its own chip, but it can't be mass-produced! So we should support Huawei, a company that can represent the most advanced technology in our own country. Huawei survived, which also proved that American hegemony collapsed and China became stronger! ! !
Know perfectly well past ask, for what purpose? !
Why does this chef cook so many dishes, but he can't make a pot?
You can't make bricks without straw.
The key is the chip, which is developed by Huawei itself and cannot be produced. For example, 5G must be 7 nanometers to meet the standard.
This question is a bit silly.
Because this technology threatens the national security of the United States, it suppresses you and lets its younger brother do OEM production for you.
Originally, this is a professional question, but from the perspective of consumption and humanity, we can also talk about this topic.
As a product of the development of communication technology, 5G naturally has its existence value, but the consequences of over-promotion and over-consumption have already appeared.
In order to limit its irrational expansion, protect the interests of the broad masses of consumers at the bottom, and curb the barbaric occupation of natural resources and social resources.
The chef in the restaurant will cook a full banquet. Why not order?
