Defects and shortcomings of patent analysis methods

The value of patent analysis has been confirmed by many examples of strategic application of enterprises, but the accuracy and superiority of patent analysis cannot be overestimated, and there are still some defects and deficiencies in practical application.

First of all, patent data cannot fully represent the innovation activities in the whole field. This is because, on the one hand, not every patent has commercial innovation value, on the other hand, many enterprises choose to keep business secrets to protect their inventions and innovations, which cannot be discovered through pure patent analysis.

Secondly, patent analysis has an inherent time lag, because there is usually an interval of 18 months from the date of filing to the date of publication. For an enterprise that is further developing patent technology related to existing products, this time lag will directly affect the accuracy of patent analysis and prediction results.

Thirdly, patent application is only one aspect of complex enterprise activities, and simple patent analysis can not completely and accurately evaluate the current situation and activities of enterprises. In view of the shortcomings of patent analysis, patent analysis should be combined with other competitive intelligence sources such as economic data and technical documents, which can help enterprises to better implement patent strategy and assist enterprises to make correct decisions in market competition.
