Long-term use will cause corneal toxicity and obvious corneal symptoms, such as decreased vision, photophobia and tears, dry eyes and so on. If antibiotic eye drops are used, it may lead to drug resistance. For diseases that really need long-term use of eye drops, you must consult a doctor and weigh the pros and cons.

Why should preservatives be added to eye drops?

? Eye drops can remain sterile after sealing, but after opening, bacteria and other microorganisms in the air may enter the bottle and multiply continuously. Bacteria can reproduce within 20-30 minutes, 1 bacteria can reproduce after 10 hour 1 100 million or more. Preservatives are added in order to kill a small amount of microorganisms in time when they enter the eye drops and keep the eye drops sterile.

So how to judge whether eye drops contain preservatives?

1. Look at the package size: Generally, the size of eye drops is 5ml, but there are also larger 10ml and smaller 1ml. Generally, 1ml is designed to avoid adding preservatives and waste, so it will be discarded on the day of opening. 5ml or 10ml eye drops. At present, only German Hailu eye drops can be kept sterile without preservatives because of the patented technology of the bottle mouth.

2. Look at the package and instructions: According to the regulations, all regular eye drops must list the names of preservatives. If there is no preservative, the manufacturer will mark "preservative-free" on the outer packaging.

How should eye drops be used during the shelf life?

1. Check the name of the drug before use, check the dosage to be dropped, and make sure that the drug is within the shelf life, and then see if there is discoloration, odor, turbidity and other phenomena. If the preparation itself is turbid, it should be shaken gently before use to ensure the consistency of the liquid medicine.

2. Wash your hands after the potion is ready to avoid bacterial infection during use.

3. Before use, gently tilt your head backwards and look at the direction of the top of your head. Liquid medicine should be dripped into conjunctival sac, and black eyeball should not be dripped as far as possible to reduce the irritation to cornea. If two or more drugs are ordered at the same time, the interval should be 5 minutes after one drug is used.

4. It is best to press the lacrimal sac area (slightly below the inner corner of the eye) for 2 ~ 3 minutes after dropping the eye drops to prevent the eye drops from losing through the lacrimal canaliculus and nasolacrimal duct. In particular, atropine and other drugs that have side effects due to nasal mucosa absorption need to press the lacrimal sac area for a longer time.
