The School of Architecture of South China University of Technology was established in November 1997 and consists of the Department of Architecture, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Architectural Design Institute.

The Department of Architecture and the Department of Civil Engineering were the main departments when the South China Institute of Technology, the predecessor of South China University of Technology, was established. Their history can be traced back to the early 1930s. The Department of Architecture is one of the earliest architecture departments established in my country. The Architectural Design and Research Institute was established in 1979 at the beginning of the reform and opening up. It has now developed into a national comprehensive Class A design institute that can undertake the design tasks of national super-large key construction projects and high-tech engineering.

The School of Architecture has developed into an important base for talent training, scientific research and engineering design consulting in the construction field in South China, integrating "industry, academia and research". It has successively produced six academicians, including Mo Bozhi, She Junnan, Rong Baisheng, Zhang Youqi, He Jingtang, and Wu Shuoxian, and nine national engineering survey and design masters.

In recent years, the School of Architecture has made remarkable achievements in the discipline construction, and the disciplinary advantages and status have been strengthened and improved. Since the 1990s, it has been included in the construction of "211 Project" and "985 Phase I and Phase II", and has been approved to build the "National Key Laboratory of Subtropical Architectural Science" (Ministry of Science and Technology, 2007), "Subtropical Architectural Science Innovation Platform" (Ministry of Education, 2004), "Key Laboratory of Subtropical Architecture of the Ministry of Education" (Ministry of Education, 2005), "Architectural History and Culture Research Center" (Guangdong Province, 2005) and other high-level research institutions and platforms. The School of Architecture is located at the intersection of Hubin North Road and Lushan Road on the northeast side of Huagong East Lake. The Department of Civil Engineering also has a long disciplinary history. After recent years of construction, the age structure, academic structure and professional title structure of the teaching staff have become more reasonable. All young and middle-aged teachers have a doctorate or master's degree. Teachers with senior professional titles account for 60% of the total teachers, of which 20% are professors. The School of Architecture has excellent teaching and research facilities. The School of Architecture currently offers five undergraduate majors: architecture, urban planning, landscape architectural design, civil engineering, and water conservancy and hydropower engineering. Among them, architecture and civil engineering are among the first majors in the country to pass professional evaluation. Architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering are all famous majors in Guangdong Province. The scientific research of the School of Architecture pays equal attention to basic research, application and development research. While giving priority to basic research, it also actively carries out horizontal research to achieve "research , development, design, production” virtuous cycle. In 2006, there were 80 new scientific research projects, including 3 at the national level and 4 at the provincial and ministerial levels, with actual scientific research funding of 54.83 million yuan.
