Years of research have defeated dangerous leukemia. Chinese doctors gave up their patents and patients received low-cost life-saving drugs. Who is he?

I can’t find a reason not to admire you, you are so gentle; I can’t find a reason not to applaud you, you are so dedicated; I can’t find a reason not to applaud you, you are so dedicated You are so hardworking; I can’t find any reason not to be moved by you, you are so selfless. ——To all medical staff

Doctors, from ancient times to the present, from domestic to overseas, have always been an admirable profession. There is a passage on the Internet that succinctly summarizes their excellence: protecting life with skillful hands is called great; protecting life with youth is admirable; defending integrity with the heart is called perseverance; warming the world with great love is noble medical ethics .

The profession of doctor is inherently full of respect. But the only thing that makes people truly grateful and respected is medical ethics.

This is why Wang Zhenyi is appreciated and admired by countless people.

Young and ambitious

In Shanghai in 1924, a great doctor was born: Wang Zhenyi. Wang Zhenyi is very lucky. He did not have a rough childhood like many successful people. He was born into a wealthy family and grew up in a three-story house.

However, precisely because they don’t have to worry about living conditions, parents have more energy to focus on their children’s education. There are eight brothers and sisters in Wang Zhenyi's family. Although there are many sisters, their parents have good education and do not favor any child and treat them all equally.

In addition to paying attention to their lives and growth, his father also pays great attention to their spiritual world. Since childhood, their father has warned them to be kind to others and be a kind person.

Under the education of their parents, the eight children grew up quickly and became outstanding people. Except for the youngest daughter, who was caught up in the wave of the times fifty-four years ago, the other seven children have all successfully graduated from well-known domestic universities.

Everyone has a reputation in their respective fields. In 1942, Wang Zhenyi directly entered Shanghai Aurora University without taking the exam and chose medicine.

Before taking the college entrance examination, Wang Zhenyi decided to pursue a career in medicine for two main reasons.

Firstly, after his grandmother passed away, his father eagerly hoped that one of his children could engage in medicine. Second, being a doctor can save lives and heal the wounded, and Wang Zhenyi also wants to be a helpful person to society.

During college, Wang Zhenyi has been studying seriously and never slacked off. Saving lives and helping more people has become his belief, which has always supported him in this industry.

In 1948, Wang Zhenyi obtained a doctorate in medicine. Because of his excellent performance in school, he was directly sent to Guangci Hospital as a resident physician.

The nemesis of leukemia - Wang Zhenyi

Wang Zhenyi watched with his own eyes in the hospital the patients suffering from acute leukemia suffered from torture and pain, and finally died in pain.

The painful howls of the patient and the desperate cries of the patient's family members made him feel deep pain and self-blame. As a doctor, he did not want this to happen again.

However, acute leukemia is the most lethal and worst disease among leukemias. It was undoubtedly difficult for him to overcome this problem at that time.

In 1952, Wang Zhenyi happened to be transferred to the hematology department of Guangci. In this department, he responded with his usual diligent style and worked hard for 7 years before becoming the director of the leukemia ward.

In 1953, the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea broke out, and Wang Zhenyi was the director of the hospital department. He did not hesitate to rush to the battlefield to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea, saving lives and healing the wounded.

After the war finally ended, the country fell into a turbulent situation. Forced by the general environment, Wang Zhenyi had to be constantly replaced.

He worked in many professions during the turbulent years. I have been a doctor, done research, and even worked as a teacher in the countryside.

During this period, Wang Zhenyi also fell into a period of confusion. He could not forget his lofty ideal of conquering leukemia, but sometimes he could only accept the situation as it came. Facing the general environment, he felt helpless at his own insignificance.

Perhaps fate was also moved by Wang Zhenyi’s heart of serving others. In 1973, he was transferred back to the internal medicine department of Ruijin Hospital.

It was not until he was fifty that he had time to study the difficult problems in depth. In addition to completing medical treatment in the hospital every day, Wang Zhenyi also engaged in leukemia research.

Wang Zhenyi knew very well that he should start studying from famous foreign literature, because the domestic medical level at that time could not catch up with foreign countries.

After Wang Zhenyi set a small goal, he would often go to the library and start reading a lot of information.

The hard work pays off. Wang Zhenyi saw a different method of treating leukemia among foreign scholars. That is: using 13-cis retinoic acid to induce normal cell reversal in acute promyelocytes.

Wang Zhenyi was inspired after seeing this method. However, even if he searched all the pharmaceutical factories in Shanghai, none of them could produce 13-retinoic acid. Only one pharmaceutical company produces all-trans retinoic acid.

Wang Zhenyi did not want to give up this opportunity, so after some hesitation, he decided to experiment with all-trans retinoic acid. Who would have thought that all-trans retinoic acid is not only effective in the treatment of leukemia, but its efficacy is ten times better than that of 13-cis retinoic acid.

In 1986, he happened to meet a five-year-old girl suffering from acute leukemia. The little girl was lifeless in the hospital bed. Wang Zhenyi couldn't bear to see this scene, so he thought of himself and his team. Research on all-trans retinoic acid, but the results of this research have not yet been used in clinical trials.

At that time, Wang Zhenyi wanted to use this clinical experiment on little girls. Many people knew about it and scolded Wang Zhenyi. Even so, Wang Zhenyi knew very well that without clinical treatment, the little girl would probably lose her life.

In the end, after some ideological struggle, Wang Zhenyi decided to use this experiment on the little girl despite the huge pressure of public opinion. In desperation, he had no choice but to give it a try.

However, gratifyingly, this clinical trial was a huge success. The cancer cells in the little girl's body slowly turned into normal cells, and eventually the little girl miraculously recovered.

The first treatment was successful, which was undoubtedly a huge encouragement to Wang Zhenyi, so he and his team quickly started treating other patients. The treatment results showed that the probability of cure reached 90%. Five or more.

When everyone fell into great joy, a problem arose. Patients who were previously cured began to relapse six months later, but after ATRA treatment again, there was no effect.

Wang Zhenyi fell into deep thought again, and he began to constantly look for solutions. Finally, he saw hope in the research of a professor at Harbin Medical University.

This Harbin professor is also studying the induction of differentiation of cancer cells, but he uses ATO, and the therapeutic probability of ATO can only reach 65%. Later, Wang Zhenyi took the initiative to contact the professor, and they mixed ATRA and ATO to make an oral drug.

Unexpectedly, this experiment was successful. Leukemia patients using this oral drug have a cure rate of up to 80%, and there is no chance of recurrence.

Give up the patent

Wang Zhenyi is undoubtedly the first person in the world to develop this method of treating leukemia. However, he and his team gave up on applying for a patent. Later, an American pharmaceutical company applied for a patent. A box of this oral drug costs 43 US dollars. But in China at that time, a box only cost 13 yuan, and patients could receive life-saving medicine.

Wang Zhenyi has never regretted his choice. His original intention to treat leukemia was also for these patients. Even though Wang Zhenyi later received many honors and bonuses, he still didn't care about these externalities, but put Donate money to your own students for medical research.

Wang Zhenyi still sticks to his medical career even in his old age.
