Academician Zhang has long been engaged in research in the fields of non-communication optical fibers and special glass fibers.

Initiated the technology of drawing high-strength glass fiber in a platinum furnace and air-cooling the filament needle tube, which became the technical basis of the new special glass fiber drawing process;

Leading the use of heat-proof materials The supporting development work of three-dimensional fabrics and glass fiber profiling fabrics for radomes has been successfully used in important supporting components of national defense and military industries such as TS missiles;

The first 20-hole double crucible drawing technology and extra-large double heads Wire drawing machine, multi-row multi-hole extrusion plastic optical fiber technology;

The successfully researched non-communication optical fiber manufacturing technology such as multi-component glass optical fiber, plastic optical fiber, image transmission bundle has reached the world's advanced and internationally leading level;

Invented a fully automatic lighting device that tracks the sun, and its technology is at the forefront of the world; it has promoted the industrial development of my country's non-communication optical fiber field.

Academician Zhang Yaoming has won many national, provincial and ministerial awards:

"20-hole double crucible optical fiber drawing technology and TG-1 extra-large double-head wire drawing machine" won the 1992 Second Prize of the National Invention Award,

"Process equipment and utilization of four-hole double crucible for drawing optical fibers", "31-1, 2 fabrics", "series of optical fiber imaging bundles and industrial endoscope research and Development" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1985, 1995 and 2001 respectively, and the high-strength No. 4 fiber won the Guanghua Award in 2002, etc.

Has been granted 20 invention patents and published 19 papers.

In 2001, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
