4.1 Structure of patent application numbers

Patent application numbers are represented by 12-digit Arabic numerals, including application year number, application number There are three parts: category number and application serial number.

In order from left to right, the 1st to 4th digits in the patent application number indicate the year in which the patent application was accepted, the 5th digit indicates the type of patent application, and the 6th to 12th digits indicate the type of patent application. Every Arabic digit used in the patent application number is decimal.

4.2 Application year number

The year number in the patent application number adopts the AD year. For example, 2004 means that the year the patent application was accepted is 2004 AD.

4.3 Application type number

The application type number in the patent application number is represented by a 1-digit number. The meaning of the numbers used is as follows: 1 means invention patent application; 2 means utility model Patent application; 3 represents a design patent application; 8 represents a PCT invention patent application that has entered the Chinese national stage; 9 represents a PCT utility model patent application that has entered the Chinese national stage.

The meanings of other Arabic numerals not included in the above application category numbers when used as category numbers shall be separately stipulated by the State Intellectual Property Office.

4.4 Application serial number

The application serial number in the patent application number is represented by 7 consecutive digits and is generally used in ascending order, for example, starting from 0000001 and increasing in sequence until 9999999.

The application serial number in the patent application number of each calendar year is re-arranged, that is, starting from January 1st of each year, the application serial number in the newly issued patent application number will not continue to be used in the previous year. The application serial number is reset from 0000001.

5.1 Joint use of patent application numbers and check digits

The State Intellectual Property Office will assign patent application numbers and check digits when accepting patent applications. The check digit is located after the patent application number, and a subscripted single-byte solid dot symbol is used as a separator between the patent application number and the check digit. Unless otherwise provided by laws, regulations and administrative regulations, the patent application number and check digit (including the spacer between the two) should be used in various statutory procedures stipulated in the Patent Law, Patent Law Implementing Rules and other relevant regulations.
