The historical origins of University of Science and Technology Beijing can be traced back to the first mining and metallurgy discipline in modern Chinese history founded by Beiyang Western School in 1895. In 1952, the school was established from the mining and metallurgical departments of six well-known domestic universities, including Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University. It was named Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Industry. It was the first institution of higher learning in the iron and steel industry established in New China.
In 2017, the school was selected as a national “double first-class” construction university. In 2018, the school was approved by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education to establish a university. At present, the school has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education with a focus on engineering and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, liberal arts, economics, law and other disciplines.
