Yunxi is the home of the ancient ape man: In July 1976, eight ancient human tooth fossils were discovered in Bailong Cave, Shenling, Yunxi. According to research by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, these fossils are about 450,000 years old. By 1 million years ago, it was earlier than the Zhoukoudian ape man in Beijing. It was named Yunxi ape man. Its archaeological site is about 30 kilometers away from the place where the ape man skull fossils were unearthed in Yunxian County. In 2007, archaeologists discovered ape-man tooth fossils dating from 40,000 to 100,000 to 100,000 years ago in Huanglong Cave in western Yunnan, filling the gap in the absence of 40,000 to 100,000 ape-man fossils in Asia.
