The future of convertibles? Patent images of upcoming BMW M4 convertible revealed

The latest generation of BMW M4/M3 finally realizes the convertible version of users’ dreams. We're about to see details on the upcoming BMW M4 Convertible, thanks to leaked patent images uploaded by scouts at BMW i4 Forum.

Convertibles have been a source of controversy for some time. Roofless versions of performance-oriented BMW?M products add weight and sacrifice rigidity to bring the added benefits of an open-air driving experience. For loyal BMW owners, this is sacrilege, and used BMW M convertibles are often significantly cheaper than other hardtop models. That's certainly possible, as these convertibles are tailor-made for casual enthusiasts who want a fast car with which to cruise around and impress their friends.

Thankfully, this tradition continues in 2022 with the upcoming convertible BMW M4. Digital patent renderings show us exactly what users can expect the convertible M4 to look like. Based on the renderings, we can see that BMW has opted for a cloth soft top, which would reduce cost, complexity, and weight compared to a retractable hardtop.

Since the BMW M4 was originally designed as a coupe and secondarily a convertible, a soft top was added to eliminate the body lines. The gradually sloping coupe roof is replaced by a soft roof that drops suddenly, which compromises the M4 Convertible's side profile and adds to its already polarizing design.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While the convertible M4 may have some questioning the design compromises, others are willing to embrace the looks for the added benefit of a roof, and those are exactly the customers BMW is targeting.
