Alcohols with hydroxyl groups connected to aliphatic hydrocarbon groups.
Fatty alcohols refer to alcohols in which a hydroxyl group is connected to an aliphatic hydrocarbon group. Usually, those containing 1-2 carbon atoms are called low carbon number fatty alcohols or lower alcohols, and those containing 3-5 carbon atoms are called medium carbon number lipids.
Fatty alcohols are used in the manufacture of synthetic detergents, cosmetics, medicines, etc. Also used as an additive for lubricants and an antistatic agent for textiles. Industrially produced by oxo synthesis or hydrogenolysis of oils.
