BMW designs weird folding steering wheel for future cars

In the patent sketch, we can see BMW's design showing off the bottom of the steering wheel that folds back. The hinge mechanism is described as suitable for use on dual-lane motor vehicles, allowing the base of the rim to fold up. But why do people even need such a steering wheel? According to the patent application, folding the steering wheel creates more space, especially legroom. We can see this on longer roads, mostly straight roads, when the wheels turn irregularly. Small city cars that typically cannot accommodate taller drivers may also benefit.

Also mentioned is the part of the steering wheel that folds towards the driver. In this case, it is possible to create a mini "table-like shelf". We have to assume that using such a feature would only make sense in a fully autonomous vehicle. In fact, the patent mentions that the steering wheel should be foldable when the car is in self-driving mode or state. The patent further states that the design of this folding steering wheel can reduce the risk of driver injury in the event of an accident.

Stretchable leatherette and other materials are mentioned. These will need to withstand folding and unfolding of the steering wheel sections. Whether this unusual wheel design will make it a 7 Series or an X7 remains to be seen, but it's clear that autonomous driving has created a need for more flexible vehicle interiors that can be configured for any driving mode.
