Advantages and Disadvantages of Marine Low-speed Diesel Engines

Advantages:

1. Unique frame-type main bearing structure, high body rigidity, small vibration amplitude, and low noise decibels.

2. One cylinder and one cover facilitate vehicle maintenance and reduce maintenance costs. Major components are purchased from around the world at all times to achieve high engine configuration.

3. The diesel engine accessories are fully installed, and the air cooler, seawater and freshwater heat exchanger, etc. are installed on the diesel engine to facilitate the layout of the engine room.

4. The diesel engine cooling system adopts an internal and external dual-circulation water cooling method. The internal circulation uses fresh water to cool the diesel engine, and the external circulation uses seawater to cool the fresh water through a sea-water heat exchanger, which increases the service life of the diesel engine.

Disadvantages:

1. Some of the first machines successfully manufactured in my country are technically difficult and have high quality requirements. Moreover, it is large in size and weight, does not have a belt pump, and requires too many external equipment.

2. Due to changes in international and domestic market demand and fierce product competition, my country's low-speed diesel engines have been completely replaced by MAN-B&W's MC/MC-C and WARTSILA-SULZER's RTA series. And most of them are exported ship propulsion power supplies.

Extended information:

Low-speed diesel engine

Directly drives the propeller. In order for the propeller to have high propulsion efficiency, it requires a lower speed. Medium and high-speed diesel engines drive the propeller through a gear reduction box. The gearbox is generally equipped with a reverse gear mechanism to achieve propeller reversal, but low-speed diesel engines and some medium-speed diesel engines can reverse themselves.

Medium- and high-speed diesel engines also realize electric transmission through generators, motors and propellers. When large power is required, multiple engines can be paralleled. When sailing at low speed, only one main engine can be used, thereby improving operating economy and reliability. When two main engines are installed on the same ship, they are divided into left engine and right engine according to the installation position and propeller steering.
