In other words, one reason for using EASM files is that customers and other recipients can see the design, but they cannot access the design data. They are a bit like Autodesk's DWF format.
Another reason for using EASM files is that they are composed of compressed XML data, which makes them a perfect format for sending CAD drawings through the Internet, and the download time/speed is a problem.
How to open EASM file
EDrawings is a free CAD program of SolidWorks, which can be opened to view EASM files.
You can use SketchUp to open EASM files, but only if you have also purchased the eDrawings Publisher plug-in. The same is true of Autodesk's Inventor and its free eDrawings Publisher for Inventor plug-in.
EDrawings mobile apps for Android and iOS can also open EASM files. You can learn more about this application from the corresponding download page of the eDrawings Viewer website.
If you upload the EASM file to Dropbox or Google cloud hard disk, you should be able to import it to MySolidWorks cloud hard disk to view the graphics online.

How to convert EASM files
EASM format is built for viewing CAD designs, not for editing or exporting to other 3D formats. Therefore, if you need to convert EASM to DWG, OBJ, etc. You actually need to access the original file.
But, Windows? The View2Vector program is advertised as being able to export EASM files into DXF, STEP, STL(ASCII, binary or explosive), PDF, PLY and STEP formats. We haven't tried to see if this type of conversion actually finished ourselves, but if you want to try, there will be a 30-day trial period.
SolidWorks? EDrawings professional software can save EASM files in non-CAD formats, such as JPG, PNG, HTM, BMP, TIF and GIF. Export to EXE is also supported, and the viewer program is embedded in a single file-the receiver can open the assembly file without even installing eDrawings.
