Until the first half of the 20th century, Tibet was still in a feudal serfdom society with the integration of politics and religion, and its social status can be seen from the names of Tibetans. At that time, only dignitaries and monks living buddhas, who accounted for 5% of Tibet's total population, had surnames, while 95% of Tibetans only had surnames.
In fact, as early as 1000 years ago, most Tibetans had their own surnames. At that time, there were four clans and six clans in Tibet, and each big clan was divided into 18 small clans, and each big clan gradually became the earliest source of different surnames for Tibetans.
