How did R 134a come from?

Since people realized that the "too stable" design of R 12 would destroy the ozone layer, on the one hand, people restricted the use of R 12, on the other hand, they tried to find alternative substances. In fact, the earliest synthesis of R 134a was completed by two doctors from Ohio State University in 1987. It was not until 1999, that is, three years after the Montreal Protocol was signed, that DuPont and ICI became the first chemical enterprises to mass-produce R 134a.

Pure R 134a refrigerant is a boiling refrigerant with a single working medium, with stable performance and high latent heat of evaporation. When used in air conditioners such as automobiles, its pressure, refrigeration capacity and requirements for system equipment are all appropriate, and it can replace the traditional F 12 refrigerant to solve environmental problems, so it is widely used.

The ODP value of R 134a is 0, which is excellent compared with CFCs or HCFCs. However, with the gradual replacement of hmfc today, the high GWP value of HFC makes its weight as a global warming substance rise to the third place. R 134a is a kind of hydrofluorocarbon with high GWP value, and it is a refrigerant to be eliminated according to the requirements of Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, it is urgent to find other refrigerants that can be used for a long time.
