Bose uses their "active noise reduction" technology to deal with car noise problems

Netizens who are familiar with Bose should know that their QC series of headphone products focus on noise reduction, and they are well-known for their ability to suppress noise from entering the ears. However, Bose’s noise reduction technology is not only used in headphones. They also brought noise reduction technology into the car. Noise suppression in the car has always been an area where automotive engineers have to work hard, and Bose's noise reduction technology can help automotive engineers solve this problem.

This time at CES Asia, Bose showcased three automotive-related technologies:

Let’s talk about noise reduction first. Anyone who is familiar with Bose knows that the QC series of headphone products are the main products. Noise reduction is well-known for its ability to suppress noise from entering the ears. This time, they brought noise reduction technology into the car.

Noise suppression in the car has always been an area where automotive engineers have to work hard. In theory, the more advanced a car is, the better the sense of quietness in the car will be. The opposite is also true, the sense of quietness will be better It is positively related to the sense of luxury.

In order to isolate the incoming noise from the outside world, traditional cars usually add sound-absorbing cotton for "stacking", but if the same subject is handed over to Bose, they will definitely not do it so hard.

As a result, a technology called Bose QuietComfort Active Road Noise Cancellation (RNC) came into being.

The technology combines acceleration sensors, proprietary signal processing software, microphones and in-car audio systems to electronically control noise. The acceleration sensor installed on the car body, supplemented by the Bose algorithm, can continuously measure the vibration of the noise source. These messages are then used to calculate an acoustic signal that is inverted from the noise signal and played through the car stereo to effectively attenuate the target noise.

The microphone installed in the cabin will monitor the noise level in the car so that the system can instantly adjust the control signal according to different road conditions to achieve the ideal noise reduction effect. It can also automatically Adjust noise reduction settings.

To put it simply, this is a neutralization therapy that uses reverse sound waves to "fight poison with poison". It is also the "active noise reduction" often mentioned in noise-cancelling headphones, and the corresponding "passive noise reduction" "Noise" is the above-mentioned physical method of stacking sound-absorbing cotton.

Interestingly, this solution can be applied regardless of whether the vehicle is equipped with a Bose advanced audio system. Vehicles equipped with this technology are expected to be put into mass production before the end of 2021. The noise has been suppressed, and the next step is how to maximize the car audio.

This time Bose focused on exhibiting two sets of sound systems: Personal Plus sound system and Performance series sound system.

As the name suggests, the former is Personal, a sound system that emphasizes "personal enjoyment". This system was installed on a Chinese Hongqi E-HS3 model when it was demonstrated at the venue. Entering the car, you can easily find that the car's main and passenger seat neck pillows have been "handled". It is understood that the system is equipped with a pair of lightweight 6cm Bose UltraNearfield neodymium magnet ultra-near field speakers inside the driver's seat headrest. The driver's seat-centered listening mode is convenient for only the driver in the car to use. This mode is particularly special. Sound effects are optimized for the driver's seat.

The neck pillow speakers and Bose PersonalSpace virtual audio technology can produce a wide, clear and highly immersive sound field around the listener without the need for additional speakers.

By adjusting the sound field settings on the central control screen, the width of the front row sound field can be accurately adjusted to create different atmospheres.

In order to take into account other passengers in the car, E-HS3 has a 16.5cm Bose Super65 wideband speaker on each of the two front doors, a 2.5cm high-frequency speaker on each of the left and right A-pillars, and a 13cm speaker on each of the left and right rear doors. Full-range speakers, plus eight high-performance speakers in the headrests, form a complete sound field in the car.

More advanced than Personal Plus is the Performance series, which is an audio solution used in luxury cars. The current car on display is the latest XT6 from Cadillac.

Since it is a luxury car, the audio hardware level is naturally good.

In order to ensure the sound quality of the mid-to-high frequency band in the front cabin, there is a 9cm Bose Twiddler mid-to-high frequency speaker in the center of the XT6 instrument, an 8cm Twiddler neodymium magnet mid-to-high frequency speaker on each side of the upper front door, and a 2.5cm in the A-pillar on each side. Neodymium magnet high-frequency speakers;

A 15×23 cm long-stroke low-frequency speaker in each front door on both sides, and a Richbass low-frequency speaker under the front seats;

In the cabin At the rear, a 2.5cm neodymium magnet high-frequency speaker and a 13cm wideband speaker are built into the rear doors on both sides. There are also two 6cm Twiddler mid- and high-frequency speakers installed in the D-pillars on both sides to meet the needs of the rear of the cabin. Full frequency range and wide sound field.

The entire sound effect is very lively, with the front and rear sound fields being natural and full, and the surround feeling obvious. Coupled with Bose ANC active noise reduction technology, the sense of tranquility and high-quality and transparent music will undoubtedly add an enjoyment to driving life.

By the way, you actually don’t have to worry about how good noise reduction will affect driving safety. Noise reduction only deals with low-frequency wind and road noise, and sharp high-frequency human voices and speaker sounds will not be eliminated.
